Here we go again..........

it`ll be a cooper no contest there but which caliber????????

neither............ you need a 22-300 ultra mag. i have had 10 or so 22-250s and all were under moa xcept 1 it was a pieceo$hit. havent had a swift yet. i dont think the recieving end of either will know the difference. they are both hot-rods. the 22-250 is way more popular. i personally dont load my 250s to max velocities anyways. i shoot em between 3700-3800fps.

I have them both. The swift is the king of velocity in factory loaded 22 caliber rounds.

The question is "Do you reload"

If not, go with the 22-250. If you reload, the 220 swift will do everything the 250 will do and do it a little faster and a little further. My longest witnessed one shot kill on a coyote was 597 yards. My last 22-250, I had rechambered to AI. It is more accurate than my swift and will run the same speeds. It does this without the stretching that comes with the swift.

I took 4 rifles on the only PD shoot I have ever been on.
17rem, 223, 22-250 and 220 swift. When I really wanted to reach out and touch one in the west Texas winds, the Swift was the round that founds its mark more often than the others.

In factory loaded 22 caliber rounds "When you say swift, you've said it all" (Sung to the tune of the Bud commercial)

I't might take a few 220 swift's to find a tac driver that you will be happy with. It took me three but once you find that one you will love it other then that if you reload BUY the 220 if not buy the 22-250. I have both and I love them both but if I have to just keep one then the 220 will stay. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

RagnCajn,

What do you do to correct the case stretching????

Resize then trim to length?????

Sportsmans Guide has both 22-250 and 220 swift for about the same price so i`m not sure if it`s even worth it for me to reload????

But things may change.

Take a look at the 223 WSSM . I like the case shape and velocity . If Cooper will come out with a bolt action repeater I may have to part with some $$$$$. I have had 22-250 Rem and 220 Swift for some years.

Philip, there is not much you can do that I have found. Maybe some of the collet dies would help, but Ihave not tried them. I usually set my dies to give a little bolt resistance when closing and this prolongs case life and reduces the possibility of head seperation. Most all cases I have tossed from this gun were either due to split necks or primer pockets loosening up after 3-4 rounds of full pressure loads. It is due to the case design. the case has a pretty good taper for the entire body length. I just trim them when they reach max. Backing off the velocity helps some, but if you run them full throttle, they are gonna stretch.

The Swift gets my vote. My first heavy barrel varmint rifle was the old tang safety 77V in 220 Swift. I still have it and have put many rounds through it. It is still very accurate although I seat the bullets a little farther out now. For long range no hold over shots it is hard to beat.

I here there are some chambering problems with the Swift due to the rimmed cartridge. I don't have one, but this makes sense. Any words of wisdom from those who know?

You can get a feeding problem if you don't load the rounds in the magazine so the rims don't overlap. I never had a chambering problem with the swift's I have owned.

I have 4 Swifts,,,,0 22-250's. I have owned a few 250's but have tore them up to build something else or sold them. They just couldn't hang with my Swifts.

The 220 vs. 22-250 argument has been going on for over a half a century. Two years ago I certainly would have said go with the Swift. Today, I wll say go with neither. My 204's have retired my Swifts and you are talking to a guy that doesn't buy into fads. In fact one of my Swifts was built up by may Dad over 50 years ago. I have had and shot that rifle for 40 years of its life. On the PD fields the 204 is absolute tops in my book.

claimbuster,

I also gave the .204 a thought, but the property i have access to is in the ca. central valley and can get pretty windy on some day`s, that was why i wanted to go with a heavier bullet these two choices give me.

What have your results been in the wind at distance??????

Phil.

Look at B.C.s and S.D's for 39 gr SIE, 40 gr V-Max or 40 gr. Noslers. The numbers are comparable to 55 gr. .224 bullets. I'm running my 39 gr. SIE's at 3850 fps MV and wind doesn't seem to effect them any more than the Swift. Besides, with a good 20 mph cross wind at 250 yds. my success rate is pretty dam low. Operator error not a problem with the cartridge or rifle.

shoot your little 204 at prarie rats. lots of coyotes will run from it with bleeding holes. i prefer a larger bullet for coyotes. i would love to have a 204 for the prarie rats and the jacks. just havent bought 1 yet.

The .204 is plenty for yotes! I have taken em alittle over 400yards with 40 v-max with no problem. The 204 might be little but sure gets the job done! If you don't own one then how do you know that "it will run from it with bleeding holes" ?? I'm sure your friends dads second cousin on his moms side has a .204 and wounded a yote so that makes em to little?

Jason,

I live in the bay area and do most of my shooting just south of here on hwy.5

A friend of mine has 300 + or - acres of cattle so i take care of his squirrel/jackrabbit problem`s.

No yote`s yet..but have seen quite a few,the last one was last weekend 35yds. behind the truck standing, staring and on property i DON`T have permission to hunt on YET.

Phil.

I had a 204 that was used strictly for calling. After a year of having yotes run with very well placed shots I sold it and bought another Swift. Smith who now owns the 204 loves the gun. If I had another 204 it will be for PD's only. Of the 10+ years of calling/shooting with the Swift I've had one runner. Trigger error on that one and he only ran about 15 yards. The Swift is KING.
