220 swift what twist???

I am going to be building a 220 swift and am planning on shooting the 40-60 grain bullets. what twist do I go with a 14 like Remington uses or a 12 ?

Hey Bob

The 28" Krieger barrel on my .220 Swift has a 1-14" twist. I ordered it that way because I never shoot bullets heavier than 55 grain. Most of the time it is 50 grain bullets and when it is not they are 40 grain bullets. You ought to see what a 40 grain Vmax at 4400 fps does to a ground squirrel! Yikes!

If you want to shoot up to 60 grain bullets I would go with a 1-12" for sure. If I ever have to replace mine again (and I likely will) that is the twist rate that I will go with next time.

12 would be a safer bet for 60's. 14 would probably be okay, depends on which 60's, to some extent, but...

Is this primarily a coyote rifle or a rat and p-dog killer? There is something to be said about more RPMs for a bit more splatter factor.

That said, I think I would do a 9 tw. I cant think of any real-world disadvantage of a slightly faster twist. JMO, though.

Well, then...the RPM splatter factor is a non-factor.

Either way, just get enough twist for your intended bullet. For your intended bullet range, I don't see enough difference to debate one over any other...provided it is enough to spin what you want.

To be safe, with regard to bullet stability, I'd go 1-12tw. I'm a big fan of the 53Vmax and even though a Swift will launch them at a pretty healthy speed, maybe, stabilizing the 53's with a 1-14, I'd still rather be safe than sorry. Personally, if I were building a 220 Swift a 1-12 would be the minimum I'd go with but I'd also Ackley Improve it, too. Not only for the sizable increase in case capacity but for the improved case life. If I wasn't going to go Swift AI, I'd seriously contemplate just building a 22-250 and use Lapua brass.

How are you on 220 Swift brass? I have a local place that has new Winchester 220 Swift brass in stock. I don't have a Swift but I picked up a bag of 100 last weekend just in case I ever get a wild hair to build one. I don't know if this is a good or bad price but I paid $60, including tax, for the bag of 100. If you need any let me know and I'll pick some up for you.

Finding a IMR 4064 load that a .220 Swift did not like would be more difficult than finding a sandwich that Rosie O'Donnell does not like.

I shoot a Remington 700 VSSF 220 Swift ,26" barrel with a 1:14 twist and have for years. I shoot several loads but my "go to" load is IMR 4064 and the Sierra 55g HPBT (1390 product code). Before I got that load dialed in in order to have a CDS dial made for it, I had it on the bench shooting 10 shot groups at just a hair over 1/2 inch.
Not too long ago I also picked up an 8lb keg of 4064.
I can tell you that the Swift, at least mine, loves that powder and bullet.

100% best powder for swift. I heard on here they had stopped producing it. But I still am seeing it out there, if your going to roll a swift then stock up on 4064..

Powder valley still lists it in stock. But figure I have enough to burn out a swift barrel

I bet you will like it a lot! I bet you get a good long life out of that barrel too. Shooting song dogs aint near as hard on a barrel as colony varmints are. I love shooting prairie dogs with my Swift but I swear that the heat waves coming off of my barrel are in the shape of dollar signs.
