220 Swift

Rustydust has been coaching me some on my newly acquired swift but was just curious as what everyone else like to shoot in theirs. Mines a Mod. 12 Savage factory barrel. I have all kinds of 22 bullets and lots of powder. Just a Monday morning curiosity question. Thanks!!

Hey Bill, refresh my memory here- what have you tried so far that has worked well? You know, over 40 years of loading for my Swift I cannot recall a single load that any of mine did not like. Well, I did try some 55 grain FMJ pulled bullets that did not shoot well, but none of my other .224 bores liked them either.

I wish that it was warm enough here to take mine to the range. Tired of ice and cold and I aint got no more empty brass than needs loading!!

50 grain bullet of your choosing, max in your rifle of IMR-4064, pick your primer. Will near 4k fps with that load in a few rifles I have been around.

Russ-its was a 55 grain BlitzKing and Rel.15. It shoots good but I was/am wanting to try some different stuff. Cabin fever is setting in. I have a bunch of everything from 40 grain to 77 grain Bergers. Several different makers. Thinking something in the 50 grain and maybe some 40's too.

Russ- Sun is shining and high 50's today. Been to the range once already today, playing with the 260 Mountain rifle. That thing is driving me nuts. LOL

IMR 4064 is a go-to powder for the Swift for lots of folks as I'm sure you know. I have plenty of rounds loaded up using that. Been one of my favorites for decades.

Sorry I cannot help you your .260 as I have never had one. I did have an 7-08 but that was in an XP-100. A handgun! Not much fun to shoot with full bore loads.

It will be warm here again someday. Or so they say.

I ran nothing but BLC2 and a 50g bullet in my M77 ruger from 1974 tp 2000 when I sold it.
Very accurate load & ran right at 3650 fps.

This is what I ran when I had one. It loved 50g v-max in front of 4064

I have two "go to" loads now for my 220 Swift. Like Rusty, I have been shooting a Swift since the late 70's and have loaded a lot of different bullets over the years. Trying to keep it simple, I narrowed it down to two that I shoot now.
My first and the one I shoot the most is as follows:
Sierra 55 gr HPBT (1390)
37.5 gr of IMR 4064
Federal GM210M primers
Chronographed - 3823 fps
My last grouping with this load, I could almost cover a 10 shot group with a quarter at 100 yards. I have a CDS dial on my scope for this load set dead on at 300 yards. For me, this is a super load combination for my rifle, which is a Remington 700 VSSF.

My second load is the Barnes 36 gr Varmint Grenade using AA2700 powder. I cannot remember the grains right now but I had to back in pretty well off of the max load due to pressure signs. It is still very accurate but not a load I use a lot just due to the wind we have here in Wyoming during the winter. The bullet has performed well however on coyotes I have shot with it.

Oh yes, if I do my part, it flat puts them down!

4064 was the winner this evening. 37grains with half grain increases to 38.5 and a 50 grain BlitzKing, win brass and a CCI to light the fire. Now to find my long johns and a heavy coat and get to the range!!

You so very close to my load of 38 grains and the 50 grain Ballistic Tip. That seems to be about as good as it gets for me.

My remington vssf 220 likes 52gr AMAX with 43.4 grain of h414
Also likes 55gr Hornady spire point with 43.1 grain of h414
Likes them seated out barely touching the lands also

Made it to the club today. Mid 40's and very light breeze. All four loads I shot today did pretty good. The 37.5 was probably the best. Work in progress!!

Oh Bill. Quit messing around with that stupid gun of yours! I can tell that it is just a major source of aggravation to you and at your advanced age this is not a good thing. Trust me.

But knowing that you DO want to find a real gee whiz load(s) for this new beauty I will help you out here. I dont mind. Just send me a PM and I in turn will send you my mailing address. Ship me the gun and I will be more than happy to work up some terrific loads for you. And, to make it even more special, I will personally try them out on our local ground squirrels. Shucks, I will even go so far as to take it along on my next praire dog excursion. How about that? And as soon as I am totally happy with the gun and what it will do, no matter how many years it takes, I will give the gun back to you. Probably. Sound good? I do not make this offer to just anyone you know. You are special!

I will keep a watch for the flag telling me that I got a message. Go ahead and start boxing up all the ammo and bullets that you have for the gun too. I will be needing that as well.

Great to have a pal, right?
