222 cal

I cant think of any cons unless you dont reload then the availiabilty of ammo can be an issue. I dont see it around here too often.

The 222 was the benchrest queen for years. Most are usualy pretty accurate

I say stop thinking and start buying! Like Foxy said, the only con is ammo availability is limited.

Pros: Good chance you'll get a shooter, if you reload it uses less powder than, say, a .223 but isn't too far behind in speed.

Also, if you look around theres a good chance you'll find a deal 'cus they arent extremely popular. Sure hope i helped, if not somebody'll be along that can.

i have one its an old savage model 340 and its in rough shape. definetly seen better days but im hoping to get the bugs worked out of it and get it shooting right. like the other guys have said ammo availability is the only issue.

Get the .222 or a .222 mag. if you just want something different, both are benchrest calibers. It's getting hard to find ammo for either one. If you reload, then it's not a problem.

The .223 will do just as good a job and is way more popular.

Honestly, there is little difference in the three.

I have a 222 in a CZ, and it is deadly accurate.. It is one of my favorite rifles.. The tripple duece ruled the benchrest scene for many years and until recently held the record for tightest group..

No one said it did. Some rounds are inherenty more accurate than others. The .222 being one of them. He wanted pros and con if the cartridge. Not one time was it said every .222 was benchrest accurate

Several years ago I rebarreled one for a friend to .223 because of the ammo issue. Had to buy a new magazine for it because the .222 magazine didn't work with the .223.

the 222 has a long neck on it which helps with the accuracy, like the 223 has a short neck on it. not enough of a difference to buy one over the other. if i was going to buy one id get the 222 mag. just because you can run them faster than a 223.

redfox, one of the cons would be the twist that the older 222rem have limiting your use of bullets over 55grs. I think the twist is 1-14 on most 222. the 223 rem has a faster twist in most rifle manufactory like tikka with a 1-8 or savage with 1-12. spike

i built one a year ago using a savage target action, shilen barrel and hs precision stock and absolutely love it. i use it for fox, ground hogs and the like. pros: very accurate, low recoil, easy to reload for. cons: like someone else said ammo getting hard to find unless you reload.

I like mine. Ammo is easy to find online. Stores never have what I want. Always a little cheaper online too. So as long as you get a few boxes the shipping pays for it's self.

I love the Triple Deuce. All that I have owned have shot pretty well. My current is a S&W 1500 (Howa) heavy barrel. Was out shooting it yesterday and it just kept punching the same hole over and over.

Definitely a fun round to shoot. I don't think that it is any more "inherently" accurate than say the .223 but I still like it.

I think with a 45 or 50 GR pill, it is just about ideal.

222 first rifle i ever owned it was a brno/cz loved 50 grain homeloads shoot very small groups all the time used it on foxes crows and the small roe deer in the uk never had one run more than 20yards. sold it 2 years ago for a rem 700 in 222 new one just missing the old ones magic but still a very good round .

Not really any cons re the .222.

Some great bullets for the .222 in 1x12/14 twists, if you reload:

Sierra 40 gr. HPs, Speer 52gr.HPs, Hornady 50 and 55 SX, Sierra 60 gr. HP.

Glad to see this thread and good comments regarding the .222. Never wanted one, but saw a Rem 788 ,fell in love, and even though a financial stretch, had to have it. Well, wouldn't you know it,just days later found a Rem 600 in .222 also, it seemed so handy.... I had to make room for it. So didn't want one, now have two. Hope to see more on the duece here. Thanks guys.

I have an older Remington 700 BDL Varmint Deluxe in .222 and I love it. Definitely one of my favorite rifles.

Pros: Phenominally accurate, almost no recoil, mild muzzle blast, nearly endless barrel life, economical to load for, fun to shoot

Cons: Limited factory ammo options
