222 rem. contender loads

Hello everyone, new to site and delighted to find good solid info. without the sales pitch in most of the Mag,s.To all that make it possible, thanks! I am new to coyote hunting and am using the 8" bbl. contender. to get good accuracy In the 8"bbl. i am having to use reduced loads.Using a 55gr sp with 19gr,s 4198 its going about 2500fps.Not too spectacular for a varmit load to say the least! I am getting the idea from some of the posts that yotes can take a pretty good hit and still run. Do you fellows think this is enough gun? would a ballistic tip type bullet be better? HP? The gun is very accurate with this load, will shoot consistant 1 1/2 at 150yd,s from sticks.

Welcome to the forum 'rascals'. I had a 10" Contender barrel in .222 Rem. that I used RL-7 in. Don't have the specific load data with me but shooting a 40 gr. Vmax would get me 2650-2700 fps.

There are plenty of guys shooting coyotes with a 22 mag and your .222 will certainly do all of that and more.

Curious why you are having to use 'reduced loads' ....your Contender will handle any published max load for a .222 Rem.

Is your .222 Rem. barrel an original TC 8". I thought all their .222 Rem. barrels were 10" ?

Hi there skb2706,thankss for the reply,Your right it,s 10" bbl, light octagon. From the info i have read the 10" pistol bbl,s dont have the length to burn the powder charge,s that the 222 was designed for. No pressure problem,s, but with higher charges the accuracy definatly gets worse. Also it will NOT!! shoot a boatail bullet well. 53gr hpfb works great 1" @ 100yd, 53gr hpbt keyholes at 50yd. evidently the short bbl. twist combination is to blame? I guess what i was wanting to know was, at 2500fps which bullet would perform best. soft pt,s, HP,s or ballistic tip? any opinions?

I have a 10" 222 Contender, i shoot Sierra's 52gr HPBT, never did have a keyhole, far as i know. don't have the paper work now, but have loaded BLC=2, and 748. that is the same load i shoot in my rifle, pretty good muzzelflash, nothing serious, just don't shoot across the hood of the truck.

have you tried any faster burning powders? i know thats why subsonics dont work in one of my 22's cuz the powder hasnt completely burned.

have you already tried a faster powder?

What 7 said, if you're just starting to work up a load, I'd try to find the fastest powder I possibly could, and start working up a load with that. The fireball should decrease and the velocity should increase. Watch for pressure. See what you can find! I shoot a duce myself and love it. (Out of a 21" barrel.)

This year I will! Coyotes in my area are in a shotgun only firearm restriction zone. I'm going to travel to them this year so ask me again next April. I'm hoping to give that little duce a workout!!! I shot a bobcat with it. 50gr ballistic tip at about 35 yards. (Extremely effective, no exit.) I've got 50gr spitzers for coyotes. Loading 26.5 gr of IMR 4895 for both bullets. Extremely accurate, but likely that'd be a big fireball out of your 10". You need a faster powder. Good luck!
