Anyone know why most reloading manuals say the old 222 dont work in a handgun.New to this site ,Thought this would be the place to ask? thanks,Jeff

Hi Jeff and welcome!

A .222 certainly will work in a good single shot such as that Thompson. I have shot many in .223, .222, .222 mag, 7TCU, and the like. Unless you are just total in love with that caliber, I would give some serious thought to getting it rechambered to .223 Rem. Be a piece of cake to do and now you got something that you can find cheap(er) ammo for and has bit more steam as well.

One of my hunting buds has one in .223 with a 4x Tasco sitting on top of it. Dang good shooting outfit it is too. Been trying to talk him out of it for a while but so far aint had much luck. I'm going to keep trying though you bet!

I had a TC with the 10 in. .222 barrel on it and if you could hold it steady it would hit whatever it was aimed at. I had a 6 power scope on it and I shot the same loads that I shot in my rifle. I sold it and I still regret it. Have fun with it.

Welcome aboard Jeff.

I have never had or shot a .222 Remington in 14" T/C Contender, but I have had way more than my share of .223 Remington T/C Contender Handguns over the years.

I currently have a new (just bought it in December) Stainless-Steel Super 14 .223 Remington T/C G2 Contender. When I got this barrel I had like 600 rounds of .223 ammo left over from a previously owned AR-15 .223. The ammo was loaded with 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with H-4895 Powder in Military LC Brass with Remington 7 1/2 Primers.

This ammo was taylored to the AR, and I wasn't too sure how it would shoot in the 14" Contender Handgun. My groups during my barrel break in procuedure were good, but nothing like it has turned in since. A couple weeks ago I went to the range on a beautiful winter day (30 degrees and no wind). I set up at 100 yards shooting off of a front Bench Rest and Sand Bag under the grip.

I shot 6 - 3 shot groups with the 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scope set between 6x & 12x. The largest 3 shot group I fired that day was 1/2" and the smallest just under 1/4" at 100 yards.

While I have never owned a .222 Remington I have long been under the impression that that cartridge is at it's best with bullets weighing 50 grs. or less. I would think that would also hold true for the .222 Remington in a 14" Handgun. I would think that with the right handloads or factory ammo that your barrel prefers, you should indeed be able to shoot some mighty fine groups with it.

I have used the .223 Remington in T/C Contender Handguns for all sorts of Varmints, from Flickertail Gophers to Prairie Dogs to Crows to Coyotes over the years. These T/C Handguns can be and are addicting. I currently have 3 Stainless-Steel T/C G2 Contender Frames with 3 Barrels and another one on order as I type this, and am saving up for the 5th barrel.

Again welcome aboard and enjoy that T/C.

Larry

Welcome
None of my old manuals say the .222 won't work in a TC pistol. They do say its not very efficient. I had a .222 10" and it did seem to lose alot of ground in such a short barrel. In your 14" it probably does much better. For the shorter barrels in .22 cal I prefer a .221 same speed, less powder. My old .222 10" was very accurate and I also wish I still had it.

jimmy - didn't know you were a previous TC buff. You know how I am aboutthose things.

Steve,
That was a long time ago and like I said I regret selling it. I could have had a .204 barrel for it! Now it is AR's and I won't sell those.
