222 Remington

I've got a remington 700 ADL wood/blued w/24" factory barrel that shoots pretty dang good. Its mated with a Leupold VX3, 2.5-8, perfect for the rifle. Its my light weight packing varmint rifle. It has shot 3 shot groups at 100 yards that measure in the 0's and 1's. It was the BR's caliber for 20 years untill the PPC's came out, that should tell you somethign about the accuracy. I will always keep mine for a great 300 yard and under rifle for varmints.
 
I had a .222 Remington in a Rem. 788, as a replacement for a .22 Hornet in a TC Contender carbine. It was heads above the .22 Hornet for killing groundhogs beyond 100 yards, much easier to load for and shot considerably more accurately.

However, it just did not have quite the range that a friend's .223 Rem. had. The difference wasn't much, but when the shots at groundhogs got out around 200 yards, or a bit further, the .223 shooting the same bullets, seemed to put them down better. So, eventually, I sold the .222 and bought a .223.

IMO, the .222 is a nice cartridge in a gun with a weak action, since it functions at lower pressures than the .223, except if you load it up, of course. It's a slightly quieter cartridge than the .223 Rem. But, unless you just have to have one for the novelty, the little extra velocity of the .223 makes it a better varmint killer on those shots beyond 200 yards, if you can choose between the two cartridges.

Very nice rifle!! What do you plan to shoot through it??

I wish mine was a BDL, I like having a floorplate..

However, a BDL dont mean its gonna shoot any better..

I traded a old Marlin 336 .30-30 and some boot.
I figure I'm into it for about $370.
The rings & bases are Leupold ($30 value).
Got a free box of Remington ammo in the deal ($10).
Wood is really light and almost faded on one side. This may be why I got a good deal on it.
Best I could tell it is all original. The factory seal is still on the trigger adjustment screws and it is still a 5-6lb trigger. I do not believe it has been fired much at all. The bore is mint!
My thoughts are to find a nice lightweight stock for it and work from there. It's kinda heavy for a walking gun. It has a full 24" barrel.
If it were yours what how would you set it up?
I'm all ears here.
