.223 ammo

So. Dak.

Just bought an NEF with bull barrel in a .223. I'm wanting to find the cheapest ammom possible for it but also want it to be accurate. As popular as the round is, I figured someone here could point me in the right direction. I'll be shooting PDs with it.

^^^^ Agreed

Mine will print almost 1/2" with them. Also, very explosive and they should be great on p-dogs.

Another one to try is Black Hills 50g VMax. I paid 18$ for 50 and they shoot almost as good as the white box.

Other than that, but yerself a set of dies and reload. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, the Wolf ammo is TERRIBLE from Handi rifles. It would be okay for shooting soda cans at 50 yards maybe, but don't expect to hit a p-dog at 100+ yards with it.

Reports over at Graybeard Outdoors say it shoots several inch groups at 100y from a Handi.

I still think your best bet will be the Win white box...accurate and deadly.

I'd stay away from Full Metal Jacket ammo..... even if it is a good price. The hollow point and Ballistic tips don't richocett around like the FMJ's do.

So Dak...
I have virtually the same set up. I shoot ultramax 55 gr TNT HP's out of mine and they are brutal on dawgs. I bought a thousand rounds of WOLF ammo when I first bought my rifle and still trying to shoot it up.I primarily use it in the wide open spaces of WY. It isn't very accurate and it is best to have a cleaning rod close by to knock out a stuck case every now and then. WOLF has a laminate on the case that when it gets hot it melts. About 1 in 50 will stick more if you have a warm chamber. It is military ammo made for killing a man not something the size of a beer can. So as far as precission shooting it will not. I have also shot BH ammo which is really good stuff for factory loads. If you look around the internet like sheaper then dirt and sportsmans guide they have bulk ammo almost cheaper then you can reload, just depends on what you are looking for in performance.

Send it to RCBS they will remove it and send it back to you free.

Hey W. S. What the heck are you talking about??????

so dak, my buddy has a bunch of the wolf ammo as stated above you will get a stuck case every so often. i also have had decent success with the winchester white box ammo. now i only need a trigger job, maybe bedding of the stock to really tighten the groups on my remmy 223. when does it end ?? i'm starting to dip my feet into reloading now. only for accuracy but a whole new can of worms... good luck..dave

Hi Folks,

I have an NEF handi in .223 stainless non-bull barrel. My question is did you have to "shoot in" your NEF's to get them to shoot well and what is well? 1.5" at 100 or less? I have bought some of these and they shoot okay but not super tight. My reloads shoot really good sometimes less than 0.5". Just curious what to expect from these.

Thanks,
Lefty

Went to Walmart tonight and got me a box of 40 Winchester 55 gr. FMJ's for $7.73. The box is white. Is this the one you guys were talking about?

Close So Dak,

You want to try the 45 grain JHP. The box is a fat white USA Winchester brand, and is a 40 round value pack. It simply holds two...standard 20 round styrofoam trays. I just bought some the other day...and they just raised the price to 13 bucks a box, at the store here in Nebraska. Still a good price though, for 40 rounds.

I bought the same rifle you did, a month ago...and I'm getting 7/8 inch groups with this ammunition.

Good luck.
