I shot this 150 pound hog at 225 yards behind the elbow with a handloaded Barnes 70 grain Copper TSX bullet and recovered the bullet under his skin on the far side, it definitely worked very well as he was DRT. Lungs were toasted.

Very good performance!

Did you weigh the bullet? My guess is 100%.

I DO like Barnes for all big game hunting, and use them in my 22Hornet for coyotes.

I'm actually surprised you recovered that bullet and it didn't exit. Do you know the muzzle velocity of your load?

No, I do not have a chrono but was using LC -09 Brass with Wolf SRM primers and 25.0 grains of Hodgdon BLC-2 in a 20" Custom MatchGrade Machine barrel with 1:7" twist.

I am kind of surprised that the petals were not torn off since the slug was rotating about 300,000 rpms when it entered the hog?

I took out my micrometer and measured the length of some of the different .224 slugs I've been using just to see how long the copper Barnes TSX really is, here are the results:

Barnes TSX 70 grain - 1.040"

Hornady Match 75 grain - 0.992"

Sierra MatchKing 77 grain - 0.985

Nosler Competition 77 grain - 0.982

Barnes TSX 62 grain - 0.945

Nosler 69 grain - 0.900

Sierra 69 grain 0.890

As you can see, the Barnes are the longest slugs on the market.

The slug weighs 69.9 grains, cannot beat that!

good job skypup, i cant get a good load for my rock river 1/8 went through a box and never got anything acceptable, shoots 69 and 77 sierras great, just cant find a good load for the barnes 70gr

I shot a deer and a yote with my 70gr TSX handloads. Neither shot hit heavy bone, and both passed right through. However, it was more than evident that the bullet expanded. Neither animal traveled more than 20 yds. It is an excellent bullet, IMO. While I have no plans on doing so, I believe a 70gr TSX could probably kill critters that are considered to be "out of it's weight class"........

What is amazing to me is that this bullet was spinning almost 300,000 rpms out of my 1:7" twist and the petals were not even ripped off while they expanded and spun through the flesh of the hog, in fact nothing was broken off or lost from this bullet during its entire flight.

Simply amazing hardcore performance!

Skypup,

How many of those bullets do you have? Can I buy 5 bullets off you? I just wanna see if my gun can spin them. It seems to spin 68 Hornady BTHPs fine but I dont know about 70s.

I wanna try them without buying a 100 bullets to find out my gun dont spin them

Debating between 62gr TSX, 70gr TSX, or the 60gr Nosler Partition for Deer/Hog

1:9 on a 16" DPMS &
1:9 on a 22" Savage

I know they recommend a 1:8 minimum, but I have heard stories of guys pushing them out of 1:9s with Varget and doing pretty well.

Ballistictip, is sending me 6 of them...I'll be able to try 3 in my AR and 3 in bolt action. As long as they don't enter the target sideways....I can work with the load and getting a good grouping.

I would like a good one shot hog/deer round to use in my AR. Something about putting a deer in my eotech feels sexy

Yep, I have killed more than a few largish hogs using the 55gr TSX. Going to try the 62's next.

Use a Barnes TSX, and your good to hunt anything from HOGS to HELICOPTERS !
