223 carbine....which powder

For the light weight bullets of 50-55g IMR 4198 works very well in short barrels to get the most speed, it will be accurate over a pretty good spread of about .75g. This powder really excells with the 40-50g bullets in short barrel 223's.

If you can find any, N-130 would be a hands down winner with the light bullets.
 
Got some range time in over the weekend. The AR was able to put out some decent groups despite the Heavy Plum Crazy trigger and a 7 power scope. It didn't seem to matter much which power or bullet I shot much at all.

The old time standard load for accuracy in an AR with 55gr bullets is 26.6 grains of Win 748.
My gun personally likes a few 10ths more, but start there.
 
I gotta try some of that TAC. My local guy doesn't carry it. If I get it anywhere besides him it's going to be at least 50% higher than a powder he carries.

I like benchmark or H322 for the lighter stuff and RE15 or H335 for the heavier. Personally I recommend buying Fiocchi vmax, catch it onsale and u can get for under 20$ per 50 and they as accurate as any factory load and most handloads.

I guess it depends on how light you want to go, 26.6 is NOT a hot load at all.
Unless you have some older manuals; due to the Licensing agreement between Hodgy and Winny, load info for Win 748 is EXTREMELY anemic at best these days. Just look at the pressures charts for it in 223, 308... VERY VERY little product support.
In my Speer book(I think 2 versions old now) Win 748 max is something like 28 grains.
