.223 for elk?

In the spirit of a greater challenge I plan on using a spear and a knife on next year's elk hunt. I'll trade my danners in for moccasins. Anyone know where I can get some war paint and a head-dress in blaze orange? Still gotta be legal.

I would NEVER take a .223 into the woods for elk. Unless it was a survival situation and I had nothing else.

Sorry to upset so many of you. The reason I posted this question was partly because I was bored and hadn't seen a ".17 HMR for coyote" debate in a while and partly because I was reading the AZ regs and wondered why we are free to choose what caliber to use, which begs the question; should game management agencies regulate caliber?
 
FIREMAN40X-good question why are we?myself included...why bother its ridiculous...i think most of us are pretty passionate about hunting & shooting sports & tend fire up if we think somethings wrong...i don't think thats so bad???? as it turns out he was stirring the pot...having a little fun ?? i found no humor in it..."whatever"....

What are you thinking. The first Elk that I ever shot had a .22 bullet in its neck and it was still going after god knows how many years. I have shot a number of elk in very good kill areas and have still had them run off. As said in previous posts. You would be doing the animal a great in-justice by trying to take him with that caliber. Dont be an ego maniac. Do the right thing with respect to the animal.

Young man you will learn as you mature and grow older that a man who has the following will never never compromise or joke about his family,country ethics, or integrity. I understand you were just joking but to some of us who have spent (myself more than 30 years)of our lives in the outdoors seeing people do exactly what you are talking about and the devestation it has on the animal tends to set us off. Forgive us for our ethics and feelings, see hunting to some of us is not just about the kill but about the stalk, the hunt, the time spent in gods great creation the outdoors and then finally about the humane taking of an animal. When I was a youngun I didn't understand the old fellers either.

True story here. My hunting buddy and I found a winter kill bull elk a couple of years ago. We wanted to take the horns in and sell 'em for gas money. We didn't want the half rotted skull riding around in the back of the Blazer, didn't have a saw on us to cut the horns off, so we got this brilliant idea to shoot them off with my 243. Guess what? The bullets bounced off the front of the skull! Those bull elk have hard heads to support all that magnificent headgear they sprout every year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

After finding out the 223 was enough for elk, I wasn't sure about the 17 HMR, so I had to ask... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Before going after elk with your 223 you need to kill a few grizzleys with it, just to make sure you can hold steady under pressure.
