.223 on a budget

Ive got a 22.250......243.......6.5creed.....308. But i never got around to buyin a 223. Any sugestions on a bolt action budget gun. If it shoots bug holes, i cant see payin more for a fancy model.
 
I know they've taken a bit of a bad rap since Remington bought them. But I have a Marlin XL7 heavy barrel in .223 and it is very accurate. I picked mine up used for $200.00 I think they are about 325.00 new.They have a Savage style accu-trigger and a "tupperware" stock. The stock is fairly rigid for a cheap gun, better than the Stevens or Remington SPS's.

The Stevens 200's also have a good name for accuracy and are in about the same price range. The one I had shot well, but I could never get it quite where I wanted it to be, but I think that was a bedding problem. Nothing that couldn't have been fixed with a 90$ stock from Boyds.

I'm sure some people will also suggest an Axis or a Ruger American, you can buy a lot of gun for 300-400$ these days.
 
I need a callin gun. Im tired of packin around the mod 12 bvss. And it would be nice not to worry about scratchin it. Thanks for the input. Ive never shot or looked at a marlin.

You do not need one, there is no reason. Up grade the rifles you have.

Tax return burnin a hole in my wallet. Got a scpoe and trigger for the 243....the rest are done.
 
Savage Axis XP Camo,great little Rifle reasonably priced and the new Savage Axis II has the Accu-trigger now for a little more or check out the Ruger American available now in .223 also!
 
I'm patiently waiting some reviews on the new ruger american 223 myself! If I'm not mistaken the axis has a 1:9 twist while the ruger has a 1:8. So theoretically it should be able to stabilize heavier bullets.
 
The Axis isn't too bad for the $$ but the trigger really stinks on both the ones I shot
What about the $325 Ruger American in the compact 223 model? 36" total length! that's with a 18" barrel, 1:8 twist, DBM and a free floated barrel...you should be able to easily get 3000+FPS with a 50gr varmint bullet so it would have plenty of pop or with that twist rate you could shoot something like the 65gr Sierra Gameking

I normally use my 243 on open stands and my collapsible stock AR on tighter/wooded stands so I think the short & light Ruger would make an outstanding calling rifle for tighter set ups or a general purpose truck gun too, if I can catch one at one of my LGS I plan on bringing it home
 
Axis all the way!
I have several varmint runs, several of which are Savages, Remington's, and Rugers.
My go to gun is an Axis .223 with 50 grain V Max's
It's light, and deadly accurate
 
Savage Axis and do the YouTube trigger job. A 3rd grader can do it, and they shoot well. It is low priced and you can get a decent scope with what you saved.
