.223 Opinions on hunting and cost

When cabelas has the PMC gold on sale for $5 a box of 20 i go buy 100-200. Works just fine for plinking and then when im done i have some more brass to load nice hunting loads into

EDIT: or is it PMC Bronze? i dont remember all i know is its 55 grain FMJ so dont use it hunting but it works for plinking.

And PMC IS NOT Remington or Winchester or Federal or...etc..etc. Im sure there is ammo made somewhere in the world and sold here that makes PMC seem expensive...but keep apples and oranges separated when discussing pricing.

Thats probably still inflated prices. I can tell you that nobody pays that much for cheap SP ammo.

But come on, if you want cheap ammo you can get cheap ammo in .223. That's the whole point, with the .223/5.56 you don't have to only buy apples or oranges. You can buy pears, cherries, bananas, etc. . . There are very few other offerings that have the same diverse ammo selection.

If you want premium hunting ammo like a TSX, or Partition or TBBC then you are going to have to pay a premium price for it.

NO not ALL .223 ammo is cheap. And just because you found a exemption to the rule doesn't make it the norm.

Just trying to keep a level field for comparisons is all. I got nothing against a .223 at all. As far as "cheap" ammo goes...I wont shoot that junk stuff thru ANYTHING Ive got...not 22's...or shotguns..or centerfire pistols and definately not centerfire rifles.

I finally got my neighbor into handloading to save a few $$. He has .45 ACP's out the wazoo..and was shooting that Wolfe brand junk. Then to save even more...he bought 3 or 400 rounds in one purchase..? Shot a few and then had a bunch split open on him...and so on....wanted to give the rest to me...LOL. NO WAY. We noticed in firing some that one might sound like it stuck the slug in the barrel....the next round might have fire coming out the barrel about 18 inches.

Yeah...Im going to buy that off breed CRA*.....when hippos can fly

Dang, the only problem I have had with wolf is I get a FTE once on a while if I don't clean the chamber every 500 rds or so. And that is only with my Bushmaster. I have shot probably close to 20k in 45acp and never had one problem. It is dirty, but it cleans up easy. My FFL said he has close to 15k threw his SCAR and not one problem either. I have never had a problem with either, I don't shoot it in my nicer ar's but if a friend wants to go blast a few hundred rounds I grab a box of mags loaded with Wolf and the "Lego" AR's.

Not trying to convert anyone, as you each can decide for yourselves what your willing to shoot. But it does serve a purpose for some of us.

That being said the ammo that is loaded in my SCAR next to my bed is worth about $40.

I would like to do alot of shooting this summer to get used to the gun. What should I do and what is the price diff in the rounds? Paying $24 a box for Hornady 58g V-max 243.

http://www.handloads.com/calc/loadingCosts.asp is a great way to figure this out, if no one already posted, (I didn't read the entire thread).

8# of X-Term is about $129 from Natchez.
5K primers, (Win SRP) at the gun show was $99.99
Bulk 55grn FMJBT .224 bullets from Midsouth /250 = $22
Cases - range pickups, donations, etc. = free.

This averages out to about $160/1K plinking rounds. If you pick up some Sierra 1390's or 1365's Cost jumps to about $255/1K hunting rounds.

I'm using the same load and it is absolutely awesome and cheap too! Out of my tikka t-3 with 1.5-5 leupold I shoot moa with this load consistently just using shooting sticks. Never had it on the bench but obviously it is submoa. It'll gut a jack rabbit hit in the body like you wouldn't believe! It was the first ammo I tried and didn't need to test any more. Cabelas had it on sale for 23.00 per 50 last week and I got some more. Usualy it is around 30 bucks a box when not on sale.

if you are not going to shoot deer and you don't live on the prarie and shoot to 400 yards then the .223 is the way to go!

Cheaper to shoot then .243. Better ammo selection. Typicaly the barrel life of a .223 is going to be MUCH longer then .243. Less muzzle blast and recoil.

With 200 zero you can hold dead on past 200 yards and there is 7.3 inches of drop at 300 so its trajectory is suitable for the 250 max range mentioned.

I almost got a .243 but went .223 and i'm glad I did. I can afford to send 50 rounds down range on every range trip compared to 20 with a .243.
