Theres a guy that has a savage accu trigger with scope in the classfieds now and the price is not to bad on it. Its a 243 its ready to go just add ammo. You can up grade the scope at a later date. I shot a not so fine and dandy rifle a couple weeks ago that a friend brought out. It would not eject empties it was lucky to hit MOA of earth. Major junk as far as im concerend and way over priced for what you get. It was a heavy barrel 22-250 that was all but new. And the accuracy was not do to fouled bore bore was spotless.
 
I would vote .243 for the application you describe.

I have a .243 handi and it shoots good enough for me. I will shoot 1 1/4" groups with federal factory 80gr, not great but good enough for what I have in it. I've been told it may do better with federal 100s, but haven't tried them yet.

There is a lot of info on the handi over at graybeard.com. There is a forum dedicated to the handi-rifle. I would suggest it as it helped my gun a lot.

I have had 4 of the Handy Rifles, two were good, two were good for shooting cows only at 3 feet.

check your pawn shops and you can find some savage rifles for what a new handy rifle would cost...
 
I flat missed the part about you looking into a handy rifle in my previous response to you. The .243 I've got is the Remington model 700. I've never handled one like your lookin at.
 
I recommend a Redfield scope. They are very reliable and fairly inexpensive. Also vote for the 243. The 223 isn't really enough for pigs if you want to put them down with one shot, unless you hit them just right. I'm guessing most of yours are considered more varmints than game and will be on the run, so go with the bigger boom. By the way, where is "northern southwest"?

totaly agree, they come with Bushnell scopes(the ones I've seen @ Cabelas).

Or the Marlin XS7 .243, on sale ,@ Cabelas right now for $265.

I haven't shot either gun, but handled them both side by side and the XS7 is a better gun than the Stevens, IMO. The stock and trigger were superior and action felt better. Stevens are good too, people report very accurate guns, and the famous trigger pull everyone talks about did not feel bad to me at all.

As an all around truck gun a .243 is hard to beat as long as keeping the hides is not a concern. I have two Handi`s, one in .223 and one in .270 both shoot MOA. These are my goto truck, atv guns....rain, mud, snow, hose them off with WD-40 and go again. Not safe queens to be sure but good functional guns. With that said next time Im in the mood for another gun I will be considering a Stevens 200 or Savage.

IMHO u cant go wrong with a Nikon scope.

Handi-Rifle is not made to EJECT, they are EXTRACT only. The manual that came with mine said this was changed recently, so maybe the early ones did. In my opinion, that's fine, no searching for brass that was flung here and there. Just lift it out and put it back in the box. Mine being a Hornet, I'll only be using it for Groundhogs, maybe a Spring Turkey. Getting a second shot won't be of paramount importance. For me EXTRACT only is fine.
 
I have the stevens 200 in 223. I also have a savage in 243. I like the 243 for a deer and coyote gun but I sure enjoy shooting that Stevens. Something about paying 300 bucks for a gun that shots like one that cost three times that. If I were looking for a truck gun that would be my only choice. I have never heard a bad word about them.
 
That makes sense. I'm in the southern Texas panhandle, between Amarillo and Lubbock, which we often call West Texas... but it's not really "West"... more North... but North Texas is over by Dallas... which is really more East...

The one that I have defiantly does EXTRACT. Usually the first one hits me square in the nose, since I'm unable to learn and remember this particular feature of the rifle.

+1 A 243 in the Stevens 200 would make a very nice truck gun. I have a 200 in 223 and it shoots great. I also don't believe anyone should be using a 22 cal for deer. I know there have been a lot of deer killed with them but why use one when there are so many better options out there. Elephant have been killed with the 7x57 mauser but I don't think I would want to try it.
 
243-no contest here. Shop around- 80 percent of my rifles are used Savages-my 243 w.scope cost me around $325 and has never failed me when I do my part.
