223 subsonic w/ Ramshot trueblue powder?

My buddy is trying to practice with his 223 more without making his neighbors too mad. He has a safe range and direction to shoot but it is still close enough and he isn't trying to bother them too much.

He was talking about trying to buy some subsonic stuff but I told him I would try to find out about making some. Ive got 69gr bullets and Lake City brass, plus an extra pound of Ramshot True Blue powder. I figured I have got to be able to cook something up with that combo. Thanks for any help.

If he's shooting a bolt action, the Tru Blu might work, if the rest of the case is packed with a filler on top of the powder...

I'd check with Ramshot on their data - playing around with reduced loads without known compatibility is not smart in my opinion. A few guns have been blown up that way. Hodgdon, IMR, the older Speer manuals, Richard Lee's reloading manual, etc. have tested data with a number of powders for reduced loads. Trail Boss, H4895 and SR 4759 are 3 that come to mind. I'd check with Ramshot first, then proceed accordingly and carefully for the cost of some more components. If it's for short range shooting, I'd be looking at some cheaper bullets for the reduced loads and save those 69 gr's for longer work.

My opinion.

Google To Bee OR .223. Pretty good read. I've often thought this would be a way to get a little more fur friendly. But wanted to check into it a little more. Maybe some already have??

Take care, Willie

I tried some subsonic 223 loads with bluedot I believe. Very disappointing. Wouldn't even hit the berm at 100 yards when sighted for full house loads. That's a lot of drop.

I loaded up some 40 grn 223 ammo with 12.0 grns of Alliant 2400. It gave a 2670 FPS with my chrony. I didn't do much testing for accuracy, ended up gearing up with other stuff. Further testing is on my to do list.

The rounds I shot were quieter, still some report though. I got this load right out of a 10 yr or so old Alliant manual. I didn't want to do excessive experimentation without reputable data.

I think that one source out of Anchorage, AK sells those chamber adapters for common chamberings. I'd think they would have one to shoot 22 ammo in a 223. Of course it would zero much different that regular ammo. A chamber adapter matched up with 'Super Colibri'(sp?) 500 fps ammo would be almost silent.

Quote: It gave a 2670 FPS with my chrony.....If you are attempting to load "Sub Sonic" rounds for quiet shooting, you have to keep the velocity below the speed of sound (1128 fps at Sea Level)...

Heavier bullets in light loads will drop below 1128 fps rather quickly, but will still make a 'crack' at the muzzle and until they get below that speed...

I can't find anything with True Blue being used as a subsonic rifle load. I see plenty of load data with Hodgdons Clays powder, some Blue dot and Trail Boss.
