223 tracer ammo...

I wanted to try to find some good tracer ammo for filming hunts this winter. The only thing I can find is military surplus. Which would be the best to use also are just .224 bullets available? I wouldn't mind loading some for my 22 250. Thanks
 
About all tracer is good for is starting brush fires, except for the military to adjust high volume fire. Check with the local F&G about even useing them for hunting many places they are illegal. They are also not real good stoppers on game. Since they do not expand or even fragment the just burn up
 
Got to agree with blinddog!! I wouldnt use the tracers. Most states outlaw them for use as a hunting round. If you watch a video of night hunting "good one is hunting the night shift" you can slow down the tape and actually see the bullet reflecting the spotlight as it makes the hit. So you shouldnt really need the tracers

Yeah, I started a fire with the first .223 tracer I shot.

He did say he would use these during the winter. The fire hazard is usually low in the winter. I would be more concerned about terminal performace on the animal. Test them out on a phone book or something. I don't know if they are hard on barrels, either?
 
I have some American Eagle tracers for my 223, and they kill jackrabbits on impact. I limit to shooting them in the winter only, and those were the only critters I had a shot at in the dark.
 
winter is a real good time to start fires.dead grass burns.we do paster burns here a couple days after a rain.you would not believe how fast they will burn with the ground wet.
 
Don't know what part of SD your in but the only time in winter there is no dry dead grass showing was right after a snow storm. And I've lived here over 50 years.
 
Bought .223 tracer's some yrs back. Bought them from Sportsmanguide or Cheaperthandirt? Maybe both, don't recall exactly. Only reason I bought them or used them. Was visually watching bullet drop & wind drift @ varying yardages. Definately, helped my skill on shooting running coyotes, as for lead time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Also used them in my old .308FN/FAL, while T-shooting. Loved that old thumper.

When we were young. We could buy .22 cal tracer rds @ our local Army Surplus. Don't recall their bullet speed back in those days. but reminded me of watching a BB come out of an old Daisy rifle. Looked mighty slow.
