"223" UMC 45 grain Jacketed Hollow Point performance?

I'm planning a prarie dog hunt and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the "223" UMC 45 grain jacketed hollow points. Either good or bad opinions would be appreciated. The price is only $4.68 for boxes of 20. Are these bullets explosive enough or should I just buy new brass and reload some V-Max or Nosler Ballistic Tips? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thanks>>>>>>>>>.....

I haven't shot them, I use 40gr barnes hp's out of a 22-250. I would think that any 45gr hollow point would be plenty explosive, there is really only one thing a 45gr hp is good for and that is what you are going to do. Larry

ky-ote I would imagine that they are very similar to the white box 223, 22-250 that sells at Walmart . I think it is a Winchester loading and it is also a 45gr HP and it works great on PD's and coyotes. It is also very accurate at least in my AR it is . also see what kind of pressure it has , sometimes they are pretty HOT.UMC used to load their 223 ammo full jacket ammo pretty warm . We shot the Ruger Mini 14 and fire would come out of the Bbl. for 2-3 ft when you pulled the trigger at night it would almost blind You it was so bright. other Manu. ammo would not shoot like that. they would show a little fire but not to that extent.
good luck.

I wish I could answer your Question but i havent shot all my Winchester white box ammo yet. But I'll tell you what, chances are good I'm goin after coyotes this weekend and I'll use the UMC's this time and if I get a coyote I'll let ya know how they did. Won't exactly answer your question, but at least you'll have some kind of comparrason.

EDIT:

KY-OTE if the coyote aint good enough info for ya I can go bust a Jackrabbit. I do have 200 rounds of the UMC in my gun safe right now. when are you plannin your hunt? how much time I got? I assume your lookin to find out how much they will blow up a PD, correct?

I've shot about two dozen rockchucks with the 22-250 45 grain hp load and I'm a bit disappointed in them. They don't tend to provide the violent expansion that is preferred on small targets like dogs and chucks, usually just 50 cent piece holes in the off side. I will say they are fairly accurate, and they're a great bullet on coyotes because they hold together pretty well. I think they'll work just fine on Prairie dogs you just won't get those spectacular aerials quite as often. ~6mm

Thanks for the input guys. I now load 40 gr V-Max in my Rem 700 "223" but I'm buying another "223" in the NEF bull barrel to have 4 guns total on the hunt. I thought if I had to buy another 1000 rounds of brass, I might as well get loaded rounds for 23 cent apiece and shoot them up. New brass cost almost that by itself. I guess it depends on how they group in the NEF. If they shoot good, I guess I could live with the less explosive kills until next time. Thanks again>>>>..........

I don't even know if the hunt will happen anymore this year or not. My friend and I were just planning ahead and I was looking for info on this bullet. We're going to Dillingham, Alaska fishing July 6-12 so I don't know if we can swing it this year or not anymore. Just getting ready. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Kyote, just trying to help you out since I have a fair supply of the ammo in question. I thought since I might be goin after coyotes this weekend I might as well test it out. Then I thought a Jackrabbit would be a closer size target to get an answer for you than a coyote would. I figured if I can find one that will cooperate I would go ahead and use one of my coyote rounds on it.
