.223 vs 22-250 which is more fur friendly?

I am sure this question has been asked a gazillion times on this forum, and I am sure many of you could write a 10,000 page study on the difference between these two calibers.

All I want to know is which caliber do you guys think is the best on fur? and is the difference between the two rounds large enough to really matter?
thanks!

223 will in most cases be much easier on fur than a 22-250. Hit bone with either and it gets kinda nasty. I have both calibers and have had both blow big holes and have had both where you couldnt find where the bullet went in. Here lately I prefer my 223 due to weight and its just fun to shoot. The most fur friendly factory round for 223 I have found is the Ultramax bulk ammo that uses the 52 gr match hollow point. Never had one exit, never had one blow up and make a mess while I was using them. They are pretty slow but will drop em dead. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Bullet choice makes as much or more difference. Same bullet, you'll usually see more damage with the 22-250. Either one throw a big hole if you hit them wrong with the wrong bullet, either one can be pretty clean.

Thanks guys! my follow up question is, how expensive/difficult is it to obtain .223 ammo? I dont mess around with reloading so I would be buying everything from the store.(whatever you guys pay for a box) And in contrast what is the price of 22-250 ammo (again what ever you guys pay). Keep in mind I plan on selling the pelts if I can.

They are both the exact same caliber.

I like shooting just the plain ol' 55 grain SP in both my 22-250 and my R15. Of course I hand load all my ammo. For me it has been really fur friendly my 22-250 will put a 22 hole on the way in and about a quarter size exit same with the R15 so far. The only difference in the cartridges is you can get more velocity out of the 22-250, with the same bullets out of mine I get 3550fps out of the 22-250 and I get 3080fps with the R15 (223) but I'm not pushing the 223 either this is the most accurate load I found in the rifle so I'll stay with it. Either cartridge I would hunt coyotes, cats, foxes any fury critter.

You have just been caught by the Cartridge Police. ! .22 is a caliber but is used in many "cartridges" .223 is a cartridge, as well as a 22-250. However they are different. So even though the majority knew what the question you asked meant some did not. So apparently when you ask questions, using precise terminology means everything. But I would go with the .223 Easier to find usually, and normally less expensive.

imo the question u need to ask ur self is what distance do u plan on shooting 0-250yrds. i pick 223. further 22-250. if noise is needed to be kept low, 223. if noise doesnt matter 22-250. both are great calibers, but honestly u really cant compare them. there is too much difference. both can be loaded down to almost turn it into 2 different guns. i shoot 223 with 77gr.smk for hogs which my shots never go past 200 yards. 40vmax for coyotes an 45gr. hornet bullets loaded with trail boss to turn it into a 22 mag/22lr. but on the other hand i also have a 243 loaded with 55gr noslers for my really long shots. over the years of shooting several different calibers, ive narrowed my collection down to 3 calibers. i have a 223, 243, 308. these 3 will do all i need done on the face of the north american continent. if it requires bigger i go to my 3.5" 12 gauge with 00 buck and extended tube magazine. if any of these cant do it....i run for my life.lol

Two calibers I will never be without is 22/250 and 30/06. 223 and 308 are great but can't do anything better than 250 or 06.

Oh this thread was about fur.

Although you may be correct, Gun manufacturers around the world stamp the barrels as caliber .22-250 or caliber .300 WM or caliber .223.
