22BR

Looking at having a build done on the 22BR. Rifle will be used for 100/200 benchrest and will also see some use in the dog towns as well. Anyone have any experince with this caliber?

I have one use it for PD. I've shot the 22 Waldog(shorten 22ppc) in BR think some use the shorten 22 BR case also. Well good luck

I shot the barrel out of two 22 BR's, one re-chambered Rem 700 V that was a new 223 take off and a 26" Hart.

I shot a load of 31.5g of R#15, with a 7 1/2 with a velocity of 3650 fps using a 50g Sierra Blitz. Accuracy was in the 2's with the 50g Sierra Blitz bullets. With the 55's, I shot 30.5g @ 3550 fps. No telling how the lot# these days may vary from the lot# that I was shooting.

This is a very hot cartridge. I considered it too intense for a hot p. dog town, barrel heats up real quick, same as a 22/250.

I also had 4 of the 22 ppc's over the years; they are a little more accurate, use a little less powder; same velocity as a long barrel 223; probably .035 more accurate than a total custom 223 at best.

If you wanted a cartridge to shoot just informal BR with, a standard 223 with a minimum spec chamber and zero freebore will shock heck out of you at it's accuracy with H-322 and Vit N-133 in IMI or Lapua brass. 1/4" groups will not be unusual at all, and barrel life will be simply unreal.

With your needs stated, the 6 BR with a 1-12 twist would be my first choice, but to each his own. The 6 BR will sling the 60's at 3650-3700+ fps out of a 27" barrel, the 65's at 3550-3600 with AA2230 which will get you to 400 yards easy. Friend of mine, Gene Harwood, set an NBRSA record with the 6 BR with the 60s going 3700 fps out of a 24" barrel.

Hope this helps!

Yep........Just finished this one up a few months ago.

Don't believe everything you read over on BR.com about how easy it is to form the brass. Not a real big deal though and after I got squared away with the right dies it's turned into a very accurate rifle.
I went with a slow 14twist to shoot lighter bullets really fast at Gophers but I've only been able to kill paper so far.
That'll change come spring. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

PM me and I'll be happy to share the lessons I learned during the build.

I think you'll be quite happy with the caliber for what you want to do. Maybe a little faster twist if your going to shoot BR., and you should be good out to 200.

Good Luck

Not to mention some specialty shops offer fully prepped 22BR brass $190/100. I shot PPC's for years and grew tired of fireforming and ect. I'd rather not but sometimes having the option of buying factory loads isn't so bad.

Yea Dave,,,,,,,, It's the exact same HS Stock as the 17Rem pictured with it.
You know that rifle intimently. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I built it as close to the 17 as possible.
You know how much I love that 17 so I'm sure you understand why I wanted the 22BR to be exactly the same.
My thinking was that I wouldn't have to retrain myself each time I switch rifles when shooting Skippy.

RePete, nice rifle's! PM sent your way.

Ackley, did give the 6BR and the PPC's some thought but know a few people with the 6BR and wanted something they didn't have. Also didn't want to deal with all the forming of the PPC's. While I am just starting out in benchrest, I also don't want to throw out a lot of money and then wish I had something else. Do you not think the 22BR is a good way to go?

Don't mind me but when I got into BR some were still shooting the 222 about the time of the shortage of the orginal Sako Russian brass alot tried the BR cases. I shot a Shorten 6Br cases like anything else afew BR cases won some matches Dick Wright tried a shorten 22Br cases shot that for years wrote articles about in in PS magazine. Remington was really trying to push the 22/6Br case they even made tight neck chamber 22/6 BR rifles with green stock 40x single shot rifles they also made x-p and mod 7 in 7BR.

Norma saved the BR case the Rem brass was terrible we used the 7BR brass to make 22/6br case from.

You can not get the BR to shoot as good as the 6ppc it's alittle over case capacity that's the reason it was shorten alot tried to get the BR to shoot there got to be so many variation of the 22/6Br was hard to keep up with them.

When Norma 6Br brass and 105gr VLD bullet found each other it was the perfect combination like the 6ppc/68gr bullet.

I shoot the 22Br and have 3 6Br as varmit rifles I also own 5 6ppc. Sure someone will say my 6Br or 22Br shoots these little tiny groups and they do but it's not on the same level as the 6ppc.

Since you want to get into BR best thing if you can find a place that has some matches go look ask to see the match director he hooked you up with some knowledge shooters their they may be alittle busy during the relay but they sure answer most of your question. Here is a good site on Br http://www.benchrest.com/

Sandhill Hunter, the minute you spoke of target shooting at 200 yards, you should consider that the 6mm Bullet bucks the wind better than the 22....that is why I said to go 6 BR. Since you are a dog hunter, I am sure that you like to see the helicopter's that P. dogs can do...don't go heavy bullets.

The 22 BR is one heck of an accuate caliber, don't get me wrong. The 6mm BR just gives you some better choices in bullets with great BC that still blow the heck out of p. dogs as well. I am sure that you want blow up factor with the bullet you choose, as extreme accuracy.

The 65 & 75g V Max, and the Sierra 70g Blitz king, 55g &70g Nosler BT will send p. dogs launching way up there.

Check the BC of the 55g Nosler 6mm against the same same 55g in 22 Caliber, it will shock you!

You know, this is just my opinion, you may should have a barrel chambered in each so that you can learn the in's and out's yourself.

Good luck!
