22lr for coon?

Will a 22lr with hollow point bullets work for calling coons from den trees? I really don't want to use the 22-250 for this as I want the fur to sell.Just want to see what the rest of you are using.

Thanks

.22 LR will work and we use them for shooting treed coon. These coon aren't in den trees though and if wounded they offer additional shots. The problem you will have calling them outta dens is a wounded coon can still get to the hole. A .22 LR doesn't transmit much shock. Coon are tough and body shots don't work very well. I'd try a shotgun if you can. Some #4 buck should do nicely.

I would use a .22 LR before a 22-250 if shooting up into trees. Use a scope and put a .22 LR in the head. It'll work most of the time but you'll still get some that refuse to die quick.

Either way, if thats what I had, I'd go hunting and have fun.

i hunt them with .22 cb caps but theyre not in den trees they just go running up trees after you call them in so theres no escape. shoot them in the head and theyll drop rite outta the trees and wont even flinch.
leaves about a 1/8" hole in and about a 1/2" coming out

oh yeah, don't use the hollowpoint shorts because they dont get enough penetration and keep your shots under 30 yards

good luck

I will be calling them away from the dens as much as possible, give me time to get on them if I need a second or third shot. Thanks for your input guys.

if you use con pupies or coon fight you can sit right next to the speaker and if your stil they will walk right up to you

a decent sized coon at six feet isnt a hard target

I have killed at least thirty or more coons over treed dogs with the 22 LR and they where dead before hitting the ground. The CCI 22lr Mini-Mag kills them very quick. I will say for their size coons are very easy to put down. I believe the 22lr will work very well and the 22 magnum is outstanding.

+1 on the CCI Mini Mag, but my favorite is the 40 grain CCI Velocitor...either one is deadly raccoon medicine!!!

Gotta call BS on this one. I've shot upwards 1000 coons in my life and EVERYONE of them went thru thier "death throws". To call it a flinch would be a gross understatment.

I've got all sorts of stories on how tough coon are. With 30 coon underyour belt you are off to a great start and I wish you the best of luck. But come see me when you get #500 under your belt and tell me how easy coon are to kill.

BTW, We rarely get exit wounds on head shot coon even using CCI Mini-Mags. I've never seen an exit while using shorts. You guys must have coon the size of hamsters.

I have killed maybe 50 coons in my life time and have taken about 15 or 16 with the 17 HMR and 4 or 5 with the 22 Magnum the rest with 22 rifle, pistol and 2 with the 357 magnum. If you have killed a 1000 then you have it all over me in numbers. So i can only comment on the ones i have taken and the 22lr has performed very well on those. From my experience , which is very limited the 22lr is all you need for coons.

Now THAT sounds like fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(I've taken coon with everything from .177 airgun to a 45-70)

I shot quite a few coons before the winter snows started up...

I've had federal hollow-points stop just under the skin when hitting bone... They don't have enough oomph to shatter a spine, so I really try for headshots.

been trying to behave myself; not brag and admit that what works for one doesnt for another. first i admit most of the coon i have shot have been trapped and were shot with a handgun which i know can make a difference. the range alone (3 ft to 10 ft) makes a big difference. since the earlt 70's up thru this year i'v shot 30 to 80 coon each year. for about two years i used cb caps, more than one coon kicked around then laid still, the eyes glazed over it was dead; oh yeah brain dead, it was still breathing and the heart was beating. used standard velosity shorts and knew i had to hit them just right. then mr. coyote started to show up on the trapline. it didnt take but two coyotes to get me away from the cb caps and shorts. now its standard long rifle, yes now and then i get a exit hole but its not bad. i never had a exit hole no matter what size with cb caps. hit a coyote in the head with one he shook his head and howled at me, couple shots later he went down, the findings later in the fur shed showed one bullet thru the eye. yep never again.

now that could be fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Call it revenge.

Something had been robbing my bait pile this past fall. The guide gun is my walking around gun so I had it with me that morning when I spotted the thieves.....3 of them up a dead hemlock. Two were stacked on top of each other and the third off another limb. I put the red dot on the mask of the bottom coon and pulled the trigger. I wasnt ready for two coming out of the tree. The upper coon had a fragment of the 300gr Rem JHP through his heart. The third was less eventful but quite satisfying nonetheless.

Yup, 2 shots.....3 coon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
