22mag or 22 Hornet??

I've wanted a stainless synthetic Ruger 77/22mag for the longest time but have you seen the price tag on one recently?

If I was to get a Hornet I'd go with the CZ 527.

If I was to get a .221FB I'd go with the CZ 527.

Not biased, just smart.
Course you wouldn't have much choice where the 221 is concerned, unless you could afford a Cooper,but even then the CZ'd probably be just as accurate.
 
The original poster asked the members which of two specific calibers would we choose,the 22 WRM or the 22 Hornet.As good as the 221 Fireball may be,that's not something the member was interested in.If you would recommend the 221 Fireball,why stop there.Why not recommend the 222,223,22-250 or the 220 Swift as all of them are superior to the 221 Fireball.If factory ammo is of concern to the original poster,then the 221 Fireball would the last cartridge to recommend,because no one loads the Fireball except Remington.On the other hand,every ammunition manufacturer loads the Hornet,including several smaller companies.

And FWIW Remington is NOT the only manufacturer of 221 ammo.
As far as having to reload, go back and read ALL of the thread and you'll see that the issue was adressed several times.
Oh,,, BTW,,, if you go back and actually read the eleventh reply to this thread you'll see that the OP DID ask about the 221.
Guess he forgot to check with you to see if it was ok to stray from his original topic.

FWIW Federal,Winchester and Hornady don't load the Fireball so maybe you could please inform us who does load the Fireball other than Remington.

The original poster asked about the 22WRM and the Hornet because he decided on the Ruger already.His inquiry about the Fireball was to determine which was more powerful and nothing more.

Oh,,,BTW,,, I read all of the posts.Apparently you can't stand an opposing point of view.LOL.

Oh guys, the original question was 22Mag or 22H, not 221FB, 204 Ruger, 220 Swift or 22-250. Don't get your "undies" all knotted up.

IMHO, if you reload, it is the 22H hands down. I have shot the Hornet for many years and between it and it's bastard step-children (17AH & 19 Calhoon), I don't own a 22M or 17HMR rifle anymore.

I load 34 gr. Midway/Midsouth bullets over Lil Gun in the 22H and the combination is fantastic!
 
Nosler loads 221 Fireball with a 40gr BT.

If I had to choose being a hornet lover the 221 would come out on top. Brass life and the ability to better handle a wider selection of bullets with more velocity is always a plus.

But if the 221 is out of the question, I would take the Hornet over a 22mag any day of the week and twice on sundays.

My second post was in line with the discussion at hand and wasn't insulting in any way.Since the original poster was inquiring about the 22WMR VS the Hornet,I saw nothing wrong in returning to the original question.I than asked as to why the 221 and not the other rounds that are superior and operate at lower pressures.

By the way,what have you added to the discussion other than your meaningless quip.LOL.
 
Clearly the only solution that makes any since is to get both and if you don't reload start . This will be good for you , good for the economy , good for America and really bad for the local Varmints . I faced this same problem and I now have 3 22mags and 2 hornets .BTW the cheap Marlin 25MN you can get at Wallmart shoots mags as good as my CZ and Anshultz .Remington still makes the 597 auto if you are so inclined .I have an older BRNO ZKM611 auto and for yotes and foxes an auto is nice . The Rugers you are lookin at are great as well .
 
I would go with a 22 mag since I have a 22 centerfire in a 223. In Arkensaw there are times and places where a "rimfire no larger than .22cal" is all that is legal.

Thanks for the information on the Nosler ammo.The distributors that my family deals with don't carry Nosler ammo.When I called and asked about Hornet factory loaded ammo the sales persons assured me that Remington was the only company that loads the Fireball.When I called them back they told me that Nosler may have made a special run but they no longer list it as a caliber they manufacture.I did check the Nosler site this morning and they don't list the 221 Fireball.It's anyones guess at this point.

Thanks for the link.I just talked to Midway and the sales person told me that Nosler loads the Fireball for them exclusively.It looks to be a good combination with 40 grain bullet,but awfully expensive.I buy wholesale and my last purchase was a case of Hornady .222 (10 boxes at 20 rounds a box) for $127.00 which breaks down to $31.75 for 50 rounds VS $65.00 for the 221 at Midway.I also bought some Hornady 22 Hornet for $133.50 for 250 rounds.The best buy was PPU ammo at $186.00 for 500 rounds.The PPU shoots well in my Walther KKJ.

If Hornady is indeed "loading Fireball ammo exclusively for Midway" like HornetHunter says they must really be keeping it a secret because all I see listed on their site is "Nosler" and Remmy.
Bet they only tell the guys that call em and tell em they only buy "wholesale" about it.

Ruger has in the 77/22 series the 22lr, 22mag, 22hornet and 17hmr. Get one of each and reload for the hornet you will be in the game. Alot of it.
