22mag or 22 Hornet??

I dont mind the off-topic stuff at all --i enjoy reading it--you guys are a wealth of information, thats why i asked my question here. Like i said ,i cant justify one cal over the other.Just wanted some advice from the people who use them both Thanks Paul

I just picked up a CZ 452 in .22 WMR for $180 at the local pawn shop, slapped a B&L Elite 3000, 3-9x and it'll put 5 in a dime at 50 yards from a bipod. Loves the Remington 40g PSPs, hates the CCI 40g JHP's shoots those like a shotgun pattern at 50 yards for some reason. Trigger on it is very nice, around 2.5 lbs I'd say, breaks like glass. Makes a nice little truck rifle for anythign up to coyotes out to 100-125 yards. Thats what mines gonna be used for. Gonna take it calling a few times this winter and see if I cant down a dog or two with it...Show the 17 HMR whos boss!

Not to be confused with an old smart a$$....is that what you are saying?????

I tend to fall in the later category, not the former.

There is nothing even remotely similar between a 22 mag and a 22 hornet in performance that would yield "similar results" Both using a 40gr bullet the hornet has an 800 to 1000 fps advantage.

Actually there might be.......
For what a hornet can do at 100 yards with a 40gr bullet you would have to jam a 22mag's muzzle into the fur and pull the trigger to yield "similar results"

yaaaa, thats a big difference. Another advantage if it is one the hornet has over 223s and such is noise. Still if your shooting under a hundred, ammo so cheap for the mag. that 5mm is an interesting option. Didnt someone recently talk about making those again?

A .22 Hornet is such a fun rifle. I have a CZ527 .22 Hornet with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 scope on it.

I shoot the 35g V-Max over 13.2g of Lil'Gun in the Hornet. It's the easiest reload on the planet. Don't even need a powder measure. I measure the charge but truth be told one can fill neck sized brass with Lil'Gun, scrape it off level, push in a 35g V-Max and Bob's Ur Uncle. It will push the bullet out the barrel at around 2950 fps +/- 50 fps or so depending on the barrel length. H110 or W296 will give more velocity but less brass life. I bought 200 Winchester brass when I bought the rifle. Still using the same brass 4 years and several hundred rounds later.

The other bullet that works well in it is the 34g Midway Dog Town hollow point.

It's not much louder than a .22LR, no recoil to speak of so I see the hits on ground hogs. It drops ground hogs DRT out to 200 yards.

Real fun low maintainance walk around varmint rifle.

Let's see, we are expanding the park...22M or 221FB. If we keep on the same path it could easily become 22M or 220S. Not the same game guys.

Let's go back to the original question 22M or 22H. As it is, we are in an "apples to pears" situation.

I have owned both for many years. I no longer own a 22M. Why? For a reloader the 22H is far more versatile and accurate. My 22H with light bullets and Lil Gun has been outstanding for me.

If I didn't reload, I suspect my answer would be different.

Doesn't matter if you "don't mind the off-topic stuff".

The internet police (AKA Claimbuster) has spoken.

Now,,,,, get back on topic, and stay there.

....low blow. Hehe.

But, I agree, let's get back on topic!

Old Chinese proverb, "Man who focuses on two birds catches neither"!

But then, are we trying to catch birds?
