22x47 Lapua

Several years ago I ordered a 22x47 Lapua reamer from JGS, and put together a fast twist 22x47 Lapua throated for Berger 80 VLD's. It shot dam good and I killed a few coyotes with it in Montana....however.....

When I got into night time coyote hunting a couple years ago, my interest reverted back to old school slow twists, as I feel speed wins at night. I also needed a fatter barrel to thread for my suppressor, so I sent my reamer back and had it reground to zero freebore, sold the 8" twist, and picked up a number 5, 12" twist Brux. I had the new barrel chambered, cut to 18", threaded for the can, and commenced to load work.

The bullet of choice was the 52 Berger Match, and I started with CFE-223, as it looked like a good match for the case, and I had a bunch. I couldn't find what I wanted there, so I moved to Varget. Nothing stood out there, so on to H-4350. It seemed to be so so in speed and accuracy, so I then decided to give H-4895 a run. Found what I wanted in speed and accuracy, and stopped there for the 52's. I had a brief fling with 40 Ballistic Tips, which I got over 4100, but decided to stay with the H-4895 with the 52's at 3800 FPS.

The gun languished in the safe till a couple weeks ago, when I pulled it out to get it zeroed with the Dead Air Nomad Ti attached.

I shot three, 3 shot groups at 100, 200, and 300.

First group was clean/cold, with it previously zeroed with a linear comp screwed on. The group was a little low and left, so I dialed the scope, moved the target out to 200, and shot 3 more.

Still a hair low and left, so I dialed the scope, set the zero stop, moved the target out to the 300 yard mark, dialed the scope up, and banged off three more.

She's ready......

I had major issues with a 6.5x47 hunting coyotes in cold weather.

Have you experienced any weirdness in the cold with the x47’s?

I have not, but typically I'm not out there that long for coyotes.

However, my one test with my 6.5x47 was in Montana on a deer hunt. It was minus 26 degrees, & I was out there on stand at first light. About noon, I decided to take a test shot on a frozen cow pie just to see if I would have any issues that others talked about online. First shot went bang, as did the next two. I killed the cow pie and I never worried about it again. Load was 130 Bergers over Varget, with 7 1/2's for the spark.

I had a couple go: Click……………… BANG! I thought the first one was a fluke, then it happened again a couple days later. Both were 130 Berger, H4350, and a 7 1/2. Temps were in the - teens.

Small rifle primers and 40+ grain powder charges in sun-zero temps was the problem. I’m certainly not alone in experiencing those issues.

Above about 20 degrees that was still the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned. But, when it got cold all bets were off!

I've found that my 6.5's preferred Varget over H-4350. I wonder if mine with 37.5 grains of Varget is easier to ignite over the 40+ of the 4350?

I suppose that could have been the difference. If you think about it, the difference between 37.5 grains and 42.5 grains is a 13%ish increase. Add in that it’s a slower extruded powder and I could see a delta in ignition.

I have had few do the same thing on 300 br
it was the oil left over after turning necks .on mine never had in low temperature .shot lots of 6.5 thew 20 x 47lapus never had it happen in cold Temps 15 below lots of time . But I do get Rumer of it happening
