$236 License to shoot MN Coyotes!

New member
My first post. I am from MN living in Kentucky. Previously for me to hunt in coyotes in MN I had to get an out of state fur bearing license ($156) and a small game hunting license ($80) for a grand total of $236 TO SHOOT A COYOTE! Is that in effect this year? It's especially galling since a MN resident doesn't need a license to shoot coyotes. I can't make the new license rules work on my computer. Do any of you MNans have the laws yet?

Yup, that's still the case. One of the biggest rip-offs in the country. I seldom get out of state hunters coming up to hunt with me. When they do come, we head to ND.

Here's the answer:



Yes, it is. Residents of MN can take them without any type of license,
but non-residents are still required to purchase the small game and
furbearer licenses to hunt/harvest furbearers.

I can't help condemning the DNR for stupidity, ie pricing coyote hunting at $230 (2006 license fees), is beyond belief. Out-of-state deer license costs $136.00, so one can't help coming to the conclusion they value coyotes far more than deer!

Non res licenses are a rip of no matter were you go. I've paid $500 for an over the counter elk tag in Co. Residents pay around $20. go figure
 
I can assure you the DNR does not value coyotes more than deer. They allow us to kill coyotes any time of the year. What (I believe) the DNR is concerned about is how many non resident hound hunters come here to chase raccoons (and coyotes). When fur prices are low, its not much of an issue. When fur is high, it becomes a big issue, especially for the resident trappers, and the MN DNR will look out for them first.
Fair or not? It depends which end of the stick your holding.
 
Residents of Michigan cannot hunt any furbearers in MN at any time, for any price. At least you can pay to hunt coyotes there, even though the rates are high. MI VHNTR

I'm fairly certain that's not true. Hunting is ok for non-residents but there are some states they limit from trapping. Maybe that's what you are referring to???
 
Randy, the MI regs are pretty specific with this requirement:

"All persons who hunt and trap furbearing animals, including those who trap or hunt on their own enclosed farmland or private property, must have a valid fur harvester license.
This license allows you to hunt fox, bobcat, coyote or raccoon, and trap badger, bobcat, fisher, martin, fox, coyote, weasel, mink, raccoon, muskrat, beaver, otter, skunk or opossum."

"Residents of WI, MN, ND, SD, and the province of Ontario, Canada, cannot purchase a MI nonresident fur harvester license, because those states and that province prohibit MI residents from purchasing an equivalent license."

MI residents can hunt coyote w/ a valid small game license, but nonresidents are required to purchase a fur harvester license for coyote and other furbearers.


It seems that MN residents would be excluded from purchasing the required MI nonresident fur harvester license needed to hunt coyote. Go figure. MI VHNTR

I think the thing is that MI residents can't trap in MN but can hunt in MN. Does't sound like MN residents can do either in MI?
 
It sure sounds like MN residents can't hunt or trap here. The quotes that I posted were right out of the game laws booklet published for 2006. Who knows what "logic" is used to determine this stuff? As far as a MI resident hunting coyote in MN, I'll take your word for it. You've got much better knowledge of the MN laws than I do. The reason for that law is those four states don't allow non residents to trap in their state.

So in return some states only allow states that let non residents trapping to trap in their state.

They are saying if we can't trap in your state you can't trap in ours.

They had a name for it but I don't remember what it was

I used to trap in Mn when I had more time. I live 1.5 miles from the SD border but can't trap over there.

We have some pretty good quality fur in these states and they don't want other people coming in and making money on it.
 
It's called reciposiky (sp?). Like in a fight. After stepping on a guy's head and you let him up. He then kicks you in the nards. Keeping things fair. Like the mob does
 
I think it's call reciprocity, and appears in several areas of commercial selling restrictions along with the hunting regs.
 
I thing that every state should have a bounty and pay us for every coyote we kill for them. Thats just my opion but every time you kill a coyote you help out the deer population. It seems like a huge rip off to have to pay 236$ to make their state a better place to hunt.
 
I couldn't agree more. I'd love to have more people up to hunt with me but no one wants to pay the license fee. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The memories we'll have hunting together should last longer than the $40 dollar playstation games they play. It should be a great year, I've secured 20 farms to hunt out of 21 stops and the season is still a month away. Everyone I've talked to says nobody has ever asked to hunt these critters. Lucky us.

That is why I won't trap coyotes in MT anymore, last time I was supposed to let the coons go, but could keep the coyotes and fox, seemed to be a high price to pay to trap, when another state lets you do it for free. Last time I checked the MN reg said I could hunt fox, but not coyote! But that has been a couple years, 10-12?? I thought ND allowed non-res to trap,,?T.20
