Why no likes for any other 25 caliber cartridge? Just curious.

Well. Nothing personal against them, they just don't do it for me.

Take the 25-06, too hard on fur for fox, cats, coyotes, and a tad on the light side IMO for elk and the like.

Only reason I like the .257 Roberts is because if the nostalgia.

Basically, if I'm gonna have a dedicated deer/elk rifle it would be larger than .25 cal, and a dedicated fur gun is gonna be smaller than 25cal.

It just dosent fit.

7mm-08 is first for me (Im biased, I freaking love my 7mm-08)
25-06 is such a close second that Its more or less a tie.
243, while its a great rounds for whittail and under, I think (personally) its a little too light for elk.

I have agree the .243 is out. Either of the other calibers will do well. I use a .25-06 on prairie dogs but mine is too heavy to carry around for an elk gun. For coyotes and elk though I would say a sporter weight in .25-06 would be my choice.

Yeah the 688 yd elk thing that started a war and me I can't afford a 6k rifle.I don't think I will shoot that far with out lot's up on lot's of pratice and then probly still not shoot but that's me.

I guess im too old school....a 30.06 is very versitile. That being said, I would buy two rifles. One for each occasion.

Yeah...I can't afford to spend $6k on anything, period. FWIW, the .243 is the only caliber I've shot of the three you mention. I was ambivalent about bringing my .308 on this year's elk hunt until I saw that video.

Of your three choices, I'd go with the 7mm-08. Good luck!

Get the best of both. Awesome BC bullets in the 7mm with case capacity of the '06. The 7-06, 7mm Remington Express commonly know as a 280Rem. I had one and it did great. If I ever buy another long action(not sure why I would), it'll be another 280. I only sold mine because it was an Encore that I didn't care for and the 7mm08 does the same thing with less powder for the distance I hunt. For where I live and hunt, a long action is really a waste. My shots rarely exceed 100yds on big game and 400yds on varmints with a few chances to 600yds. If you didn't have but one 220 swift and no 22-250, I'd say go 243. As much as I love my 7mm08, I wouldn't be able to justify owning it and a 308 though. Just like I can't justify a 25-06 or 22-250 now that I have a 243 or a 260 now that I have a 243 and 7mm08. If you have money to throw away, I say get one of each, otherwise spread them out a little better.

I use to want a gun that would do everything. Now I like having rifles that are great at one thing. The thought of an all around rifle is nice, but you have to sacrifice something somewhere to get it

. When I leave to go deer hunting, I grab a deer rifle. When I go groundhog hunting, I grab my varmint rifle. When I go calling, I grab a calling gun. Sure they can do more than one thing, but most are designed to do one thing really well

No thanks....I like to pick my battles and thats one I choose not to have. I have an understanding with my wife, I dont tell her how to spend her "Mad Money" and she doesnt tell me how to spend mine.....Good luck on your quest......

257 roberts,260,280 i did look at them but the ammo is a little harder to come buy but i do reload so i guess i'm kinda open. But if I was in a pinch and needed factory ammo those seem easier to find IMO.

Get a Savage 7/08. As money allows you buy a factory barrel in 22/250 or 243 for under $100. Only thing to change is the centerfeed box if u go with the 250. That's what I did. I bought the 250 then got the 7/08 ER Shaw barrel with wrench from Midway USA. Shoots .75 groups. I have the best of both! I shot some hogs and coyotes with 139 grain SSTs the coyotes were almost shot in two !

I don't think you can beat the .25-06 for what you want. Mine is a Rem 700 VS back from when they chambered the heavy barrel in this cartridge.

I'm 62 and still carry this rifle in the field and I'm in average shape. It's a rare occasion when I find a shot to far for the .25-06. The areas I hunt can have shots to 600 yards at times so I need something that shoots flat.

Bullet weights range from 75 gr to 120 gr and cover a lot of game. I wouldn't want to use this cartridge on prairie dogs as it's overkill. But I've used it for a lot of other things.

The fact that this was my only centerfire rifle for 25 years will tell you how versatile it is.

7-08 of the three you listed. I love that cartridge and have elk hunted with it. Took it as a back up rifle, and ended up carrying it more then my heavy mag rifle.

I know its vanilla, but a 270 Win would fit you bill nicely, and there are endless choices of factory ammo.
