243...55 OR 70 grain bullets for 400 yards?

Try 46-47g of H or IMR 4064 with a Win primer with the 70's, which will be going 3600 +/- fps.

I killed a lot of yotes with the Sierra 60's with a hot load of Win 760, great bullet.

Thats why I stated early in this thread 58g Vmax`s shoot a tight group in MY rifle.I also agree with you need to practice shooting at greater distances to be worth a darn at it. I will be practicing up here as soon as the mud dries a little...a friend at work invited me to go with on a P.Dog shoot..it will be my first and you could say I`m pretty revved up.

that all depends on the rifle. some will shoot some bullets good some will shoot alot of bullets good. You can never tell what a rifle is going to shoot. That is the fun in reloading the experimentation. HAPPY HUNTING

If you have a 1:10 or less twist and a barrel length 25-26", and with a very warm load you may still have stabilization at 400 yds with those bullets. Bigger bullets, faster twist, slower powder with a min 25" barrel may work better. To me its 200-300yd shooter at best. A 6.5 is a better choice to get that kind of shooting. I have both and use a .243/85 g bullet for shooting 100-200 yds. A 6.5-284 for hunting out to 600 yds with a 140 g bullet.

I have a buddy that i've been hunting with a lot this year. He's using an AR-10 that shoots the 87 V-Max into ~.5 MOA or better. He has a Leupold VX-III with VH reticle and turrets, and has dope for each system on his gun. He also carries an I-Pod Touch with him that has the JBM ballistics program on it that he inputs air density changes into the program every so many hours from a Kestrel. He's shot 5 times from 470-785 yds. now, and killed 4 of them on the 1st shot. The 5th was an error on his part. The 785'er was a through the lung shot and died quickly practically on the spot. A 650-yarder was back in the liver area and took awhile to expire, but we did recover it no addtl. shots needed. To apply shots like this though u need the gizmos and a bullet that'll give u the best chance of expanding at those kind of ranges. IMO, the 87 V-Max is 1 of the best i've seen for all the needed qualities--accuracy, some mass, BC, and polymer-tip which helps with BC and expansion.

The 58's were flying right at about 3,593 fps for me today, and the 70's at 3,445. I may have to go a little further with the 58's, and I think I'll try 4064 with the 70's next. But now that I know I can drive the 70's to this type of speed without any signs of pressure... may just go this route.
