243 loads

Just did some trading and I wound up with a 1970s (so I'm told) Remington 700 243 win varmint. 24" barrel. Not sure on twist. I got some loaded rounds with 95g vld and rl22. I also traded some 175gr smk for 600 hornady 105 match bullets. I'm looking for a different weight bullet also for general. I'm looking at the 85gr sierra bthps I used to shoot in. Y wssm. I've got imr4007ssc, imr4831 and a bunch of TAC. What would be a decent start load to look at?

I don't think I would go with a powder slower than one of the 4350s. You would probably be better off with one of the 4895s or 4064. That is for an 85 grain bullet.

Any idea the twist is without checking it?

Twist should be 1/9.125"

My Rem 700 ADL 24" .243 shoots great with the 105 Match and 46.2grs H1000. It holds up well out to 808yds which is as far as I have been able to shoot it. For 3 shots mine is consistently under .5" @ 100yds with the 105 match.

87 V-max seem to shoot great and kill amazing in any factory 6mm/243 I've ever tried. and with .400BC it can reach out a long ways.

I agree the 87gr vmax is great in my 10 twist 243 over imr 4064. 700 yards is the farthest I've shot with it. And I'm not very good at that range. But I'm working on it. They will hammer coyote!

I have found H380 works well with 85gr speer spbt

Also holding half inch groups at 200 yards with h414/win760 same powder and a 55gr sbk or a 58gr vmax and WLR primer

That's a nice looking rifle. I have the exact same gun. For prairie dogs, I don't have any 85 grain combo, my 700 likes the 58 v-max over 51.2 grains hodgdon superformance. That's an unpublished load ( use at your own risk) but shows no pressure signs at all. Really a death ray on a dogtown.

My other loads for this rifle:

40.0 IMR 4350 - 100 grain sierra pro hunter

38.0 H380 - 95 grain VLD

34.0 varget - 100 grain hornady BTSP (.3 over max)

It really is a nice looking, good shooting rifle. Good luck, have fun with it.

I took 15 loads out from 36.5-37.1 and shot them with the imr4007sc. Seems the hight to max load (38 published) it shoots better. Was kinda windy and forgot my cradle. Was shooting at 200 and the low charge was about 4" verticle spread. The 37.1 was about 1.5" horizontal. I'm loading more at 37.1 and up to 38 now. This is all at book coal. 2.71. Then I'll work on seating depth. Gonna find lands in a bit to and get some office measurements. Again I'm shooting the 105 hornady bthps.

I run 105 a maxes with 41 gr of h 4350. Shoots well in my 8 twist cbi barreled savage. Also push a 87 gr vmax at 3250 with a 43.5 gr charge of 4350

I seen some when I was google searching but not much. Wondering if someone with quik load could check it out? Seems what I saw was only 90% case fill. It shot good out of my old 308 so I wonder why it wouldn't be listed?

I have never seen load data for TAC with the .243 Winchester. I use TAC in my .223, .308 and .30-30, would love it if it was a good fit for the .243 but never found reliable data.

Tac is way too fast. In the Ramshot lineup, Big Game is suitable for light bullets and Hunter or Magnum are good choices for heavies.

I just worked up a load for the Tikka and settled on 37.0gr of IMR 4064 with a Speer BTSP with an OAL of 2.710. Velocity is only 2974fps, but I don't think the deer will notice. Accuracy is 5/8". I tried the Sierra 100gr BTSP, but it just didn't like them.
