243 or 25/06

I want to buy a rifle, probably a Stevens 200.

I want to know your opinions on cal. The Stevens comes in both calibers, obviously one is short and one is long action.

I will use the rifle for deer hunting in Wisconsin, and coyotes in Illinois, but I do have a 223 for the yotes, so it will be more for deer. I like the light bullets in the 243, but the 25/06 sounds interesting.

What do you think?

Both work exceptionally well for "crossover" guns that work on varmints an deer. I shoot a 243 at times and got a brother in law that loves his 25-06 and has killed a pile of deer and coyotes with it.

Get the caliber you like best.

I have a .243 and really like it for coyotes. I do not like it as a deer gun. I know,..lots do. I have a friend who killed many elk with his. My bigest trophy deer fell to a 400 yd single shot from a .243 with a 80 grain bulet. (Long story)It will get them.

If I had the choice, a 25/06 would be the one. It is simply the best choice for deer and that is what you are wanting.

i dont belive that theres a clear winner in ballistics out of either. but i like a short action so the .243 is my choice of the two.

As far as long vs. short action it won't matter. All the Stevens rifles are long actions.

Savage is using up all their old 110 (long) actions and that's why the Stevens rifles are so inexpensive. They're a great rifle for someone on a limited budget.

As far as ballistics go... These two cartridges are IMO the best varmint/medium game cartridges around with neither having a real world advantage over the other.

The 25-06 has a slight edge for medium game and the 243 is slightly more versatile for varmints and small game but the differences are small.

Get whichever you want based on the bullet weights you intend to use.

Not according to their website. They have a long and short action.

The overall length of the short action rifle is 1 inch different.
 
I stand corrected. I bought a Stevens 200 when they first came out in 243 and it was definitely a long action.

I was told then that they were using up all the old 110 actions and all of them were long actions.

the 243 with a 100g bullet at 3000 fps will kill a deer at 300 yards with no problem. A 25/06 will shoot the same 100g bullet in a factory load at 3250-3300 fps and a hand load at 3500 fps...not exactly comparing apples and apples.

i just purchased a savage 111 in 25/06 back in november. i wanted a "crossover" gun... something my youngest brother could use for deer hunting, and i could take it out and snipe the occasional coyote. well.. he shot his first buck with it, and i'm gonna go check out some new yote territory tomorrow. like everybody says.. they ain't pretty.. i threw a quick coat of white krylon on the tupperware stock for a quickie winter camo job and turned the trigger down. it came witha 3-9x40 simmons on it that does the job for right now. when i sighted it in ..it was doing an inch and a half at 200. good enuff for me.. savage gets my vote!

25-06 75 to 120 grains
243 55 t0 105.

As Krankie also said , you already have the .223 at 40 to 75 +/-.
