243 rounds

I guess I will go ahead and say it first: 243 and fur friendly is and oxymoron. Best I can say is it may work okay some of the time with light frangible bullets when things are right, or get real messy when they aren't. A lot of fellas will go with a stouter constructed, heavier bullet and just count on having a smaller exit hole. You may get a few front on shots that will not exit with the varmint bullets, but the broad side shots will often give you "dynamic" exits. Good luck, and if you find something that is fur friendly, be sure and let us know.

If you are intersted in collecting fur, traps and snares are much better at it. They also work 24/7.
No rifle can even come close.
The price today makes fleshing and stretching a much lower paying thing than McDs.

That is probably true in some cases, but what if you only have a couple of days a week to either hunt or set traps?

In my situation, I suppose I could set traps on Saturday morning, and check them on Sunday morning. Then close them so nothing will get caught while I'm at work M-F. Well maybe, but then again, we aren't allowed to set snares, dirt hole or other land traps on public land here. We can do water sets. I hunt mostly public land.

I think I'll have better odds with my rifle.

Only bullet that I have shot that didn't leave a big hole out was the 65gr V-max and that was a neck shot! I know you wanna stay away from the 70gr NBT's as they show you the insides every time! My guess is to find the lightest one and push it as fast as you can. Or shoot them when they are 200+ yards out and prey for the best!

I myself will be stepping back down to a .223 and leaving the .243 at home or put a 22-250 barrel on it.

I heard that if you buy match bullets it would mean if the bullet is 6mm on impact it can only expand to about 6.5mm but I havent tried it yet, bullets are on the way.

That's baloney.
There are lots of different match bullets with different jackets. Some won't expand much but most have pretty thin jackets and expand readily.

You were given BAD info....My pet load uses 70gr. nosler match bullets.....50% of the time, they explode and dont exit and 50% of the time they leave a softball-sized exit hole. "match" bullets are notoriously inconsistent performers in flesh.

I do hear pretty good things about the Berger varmint bullets but havent used them myself.

I've been shooting Sierra 85 grain BTHP's from my .243 for the past 5 or 6 years. 9 times out of 10 they exit leaving a quarter size hole. I've had very few that have just flat been ruined. I use the same bullet in a 55 grain from my .22-250 and also have very good luck with it.
You can buy factory loaded ammo with this bullet in Federal Premium. I load my own, with the .243 at 3100 FPS, and the .22-250 at 3500 FPS.

I've started shooting barnes 62gr Varmint grenades out of mine. I've shot 5 coyotes this year with that rifle between 100 and 250 yds so far no exit just a dime size hole going in. They have all been broad side center of chest though.

What about trying a Barnes copper bullet, not a copper jacketed one. I know some states don't allow FMJ bullets. I have never tried Barnes bullets so I can't give an opinion, but would seem to think that they would not tear up fur near as bad as a jacketed bullet. I have 20 of them that I am gonig to load in a 7mm and try. I am curious as to the answer to his question and my thoughts. I haven't bought any due to price but do have those 20 that were given to me.

Please let us both know,

Tony
