.243 vs 25-06 vs 308 vs?

I'm going to throw my vote in for a 25-06.

But if you're considering a .30 caliber in the .308, and want to find ammo EVERYWHERE ... you can't go wrong with a standard, time proven 30-06. Great for deer, and it'll even kill an occasional coyote.

'coure, the 25-06 will do all that too.

I'd pick the 25-06 over the Bob someone recommended as well.
 
My self I would skip the 22-250.
A 243 with .55gr. NBT will do anything a 22-250 will. Then get a .308 you can load it down for varmints or upsize (180gr.) it for bear and elk!

I like short action my self!

Did you mention what you have in the 30 cal. range? If you don't have something close I would lean towards the 308. There are plenty of ammo choices from low recoil to 'light mag'. You may end up on a U.P. bear hunt someday. I have 3 308's & a bunch of other cal's. If I had to use one round for everything it would have to be a 308. Yes, it is a common round, but just like a black labrador, it is common for a reason.
 
I do not have a larger caliber rifle. I just sold my 270 because i havent used it in 8 or 9 years. It had only been shot about 15 times. I do go up north more now to deer hunt but i have been using my wifes .243 or my rifled slug gun.
 
I would either go with a 243 or 25-06 and flip a coin. I have both and love the way they put yotes down. I usually carry my 243 if I have a long hick to my stand. But if I know that I could have a long shot or if it's windy I carry my 25-06. Have never shot a 308. So I can't comment. If you are looking for a back-up gun for someone else to shoot then I might lean to the 243 it has less recoil than 25-06. And you will run less of a risk of turning some off on shooting if they have not shot that much before of give them a bad habbit.
