.243 vs .308 vs .270 for deer

The .308 gives you the widest range of bullet weights out of the 4 mentioned. You can get anything from 110 gr. to 200 gr. and in any design they make. If your shots are going to be 150 yards or less, all the ballistic coefficient advantages aren't going to be seen. It's a very accurate cartridge and the brass is easily found.

I started both my daughters out with a single shot .243 and they both killed several deer with proper bullet placement. After they got older I purchased both of the a .308 using 150g PSP. They have both graduated to just shooting deer over 140 class only. The .308 delivers flawlessly. However myself, I can't help it, I guess its just a guy thing, I shoot a .300 mag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have used all the rounds for deer hunting with great success. I find my self grabbing the .270 Win when I go on guided hunts. I think that it is a good all around gun. Just remember that the right round and shot placement is the key for all shots.

I've taken tons of Mule deer bucks over the past thirty too forty some odd years with some elk and tons of coyote's with the 243 and 257 Roberts, with the Roberts I shoot 100 gr Barns Trip Shock Bullets and 75 gr Hornady V Max for varmints. Works goo for me.

Thanks once again for all the help and information regarding the choice I have to make, one thing rings true for sure what ever I choose the most important thing is shot placement with out that nothing counts, and any of the cals seem to work for well for those that use them, going to look at a few rifles this saturday hopefully will get sorted though I am starting to lean torwards the 308 as my local gun dealer has more good used 308s than anything else we will see what happens and will let you know how I get on,
thanks once again to everyone and all their advice
