.243 win vs. 6mm Rem

It's not obsolete at my house, and I bet it's not obsolete at a lot of other houses either. It has never had the popularity of the 243 Win, perhaps for all of the often repeated and widely chronicled reasons, but the 6MM is a great cartridge.

At least near where I live, brass is available, so it's not going to become extinct anytime soon around here, IMO.

I have a lifetime supply of brass, most of which was purchased at Cabela's. I like my 6mm better than the .243 that I used to own.

Realistically, there is not enough practical difference to care. Flip a coin and you have a winner either way.

Yeah... the 6mm Remington is obsolete, along with the .220 Swift and the 22 Hornet.

Soon to be followed by 22lr, 223 and 30-06.

17hmr is all anybody needs anyway.

That's a relief, I'd hate to get saddled with a rifle nobody wanted.

The 6mm will never be obsolete in my opinion. I own three 6mms and two 243's but I have always preferred the 6mm over the 243 for a couple of reasons. One I feel the 6mm case with the sharper shoulder doesn't stretch as much as the 243, with most bullet weights you can gain velocity with the 6mm and I feel the 243 will erode your rifles throat quicker than a 6mm will. Besides I think the 6mm is a sexier looking cartridge.

Please explain this statement. Inquiring minds want to know.

Personally, I think the .243 will always be in second place when compared to a 6MM. Had Remington been smart, they would have never made a Model 700 in .243 Winchester. Where would we be then? We might be talking about the obsolete .243.

The 1 in 9 twist of the 6MM gives you more options on the good bc bullets, over the 1 in 10 of the .243.

The nearly 100 fps you gain, gives you less wind drift and less drop.

There are a lot of great cartridges that are not that popular, 222 magnum, 220 Swift, 257 Roberts, 260, 280...

Not everyone wants to shoot a .223, .243, 308, or a 30-06, all the time.

That is an interesting point, and I think you are right.

Funny thing is, Winchester makes a special run of 6mm Rem brass cases about one a year, and they are sold out before they are made... the 222 Mag hasn't been a factory cartridge for 50-ish years, yet the brass is in continual production, and custom rifles are chambered in it all the time (and it is a favorite of mine).

Winchester made a run of .257 Roberts rifles last year and they were sold before they even got out of the factory. I tried to get one and they were already gone.

Kinda says something, ya think??
