243 WSSM ?

What is the velocity of these from the factory? What bullet manufacturers make them? I heard it is supposed to be flater shooting that the regular 243 any truth to this?

I found this info on the guns and ammo website.

"Winchester's newest entry in the 6mm field is the .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum (WSSM). This case is nearly identical to the .223 WSSM but necked up to 6mm. It's much shorter than the standard .243. The performance numbers are interesting. While the two cases have almost identical volume, the WSSM produces factory velocities about 200 fps faster than the .243 Winchester. That sounds like a very strong argument for short and fat until you look at the factory pressures. The .243 is held to a 60,000-psi pressure level while the .243 WSSM pushes 65,000 psi."

So it would be flatter shooting but your barrel wouldn't last near as long. I looked at this round before getting my .243. I still am intreged by the little fat round though.

winchester is the only one making brass and factory loads for it. You can go there and click on the factory load you want to look at and it will tell you velocity.

Only Browning chambers a rifle for this round and Winchester is the only one with brass and loads. 55's run about 4000 fps. Don't really see a need for these as brass and loaded ammo are really expensive. Stick with a std .243 or 6mm Rem. Much better in the long run.

I have a Win Model 70 featherlight in this caliber. Simply put I LOVE IT!!! It will put 3 shots easily within .75". It will shoot better than I can. No kick either, my 2 girls shot their first deer with it this year. All told, this caliber has taken 4 deer. One big buck at 300 yards, 2 does within 100 yards and a small buck at 185.

I going with the 243 WSSM only because it works in an AR15 platform. I found Federal brass much cheaper than Winchesters at Graf & Son's

Did Federal stop making brass and this is left over / surplus?

Edit: Federal does not make the brass anymore and probably never did, just had their head stamp put on this brass.

I sould like a broken record but Reed's Ammo in Oklahoma makes some good loads for the 243 WSSM that average $16 a box. I was shooting 75 grain V-Max bullets out of my Super Shadow.

Got two. My Browning A-bolt shoots average groups. Nothing to phone home about.

My D-tech AR-15 is another story! Great repeatability and very little muzzle jump with his custom compensator. This one ROCK'S!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Not claiming single holers but an awesome and pleasurable weapon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You actually see a lot of factory rifles shooting that well on the internet.
