I am trying to learn as much as I can before I order a new barrel for one of my Savages......I am looking very hard at a 25/06 AI. One of the options is 25-06 Ack. Imp. (.285"). Would someone please hook a brother up on what the heck the all this stuff means? I am like a sponge trying to learn, but this sponge ain't real smart yet.

thanks

.285" is your chambers neck diameter. My 25-06 A.I has a .287" neck, which means its a no-neck turn chamber. A .285 probably would require some neck turning. Can't help you with that, because I don't neck turn for anything.

Is this going to be a hunting rifle or a bench gun? If it's a hunting rig, stay with Flybuster' idea of the 287" no turn necks that way you can feed it factory 25-06 ammo in a pinch and not have to turn down all the necks to get them to feed well.

Just a thought /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It will be a hunting rig, I would definitely not want to have to turn the necks to get them to shoot....so in a .285 neck you would have to turn down every piece of brass to the .285 neck size..thanks, like I say, I am trying to learn as much as possible.

First get your brass and seat a bullet, then measure loaded neck dia. Better still would be to get a bag each of two or even 3 different headstamps and measure the loaded necks. Not all brass has the same neck thickness and one headstamp might require neckturning while another doesn't.

***Addition: Just go to a gunstore with a set of calipers and check loaded factory ammunition. Measure the necks on every brand they have.

Norma 270 brass loaded with a 87 speer TNT= .285"
Winchester 25-06 brass loaded with Sierra 100grn.=.283"

A 0.285" neck is too small for a hunting rig. It will be a headache to manage, expecally for a new guy.

Get a 0.288" or larger.

.

I'd have to go along with the general consensus, no turning. My 25-06AI shoots well enough that only a BR guy would notice any improvement........ can't imagine many benchresters are shooting the 25-06, AI or otherwise. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nope, I can't imagine that eiter! I tried mine in a benchrest match this month for giggles. Keep in mind its a hunting rifle, with a hunting stock. I was horriefied at my 9" groups at 600 yards. I've done better at 1000 yards with this rifle. I had better stick to a bi-pod and sand bag.

I assume you looked at Shilen site they list two options for the 25-06AI one is a standard chamber the other
25-06AI (.285") would be for turning necks. Apparently someone like a .285 neck for the 25-06AI if I was shooting a LR varmit rig I would consider that neck.
