25/06 or 308

I own both and both are more than capable of 600 yard accurate kill shots. My preference is on the .308 though. I do like 7mm-08 a lot, however I just don't own one.

You've obviously never hunted rimrock country, but even I give it up at much beyond 400 yds. I've hunted rimrocks all my life.

Neither cartridge for deer at 600, nor 600 for deer. If he insists, tell him to chamber a .280 Remington and handload 162-gr A-Max bullets for it, then compete in F-class matches until he learns the wind....
 
I lived and hunted big game in COL, N.M. and Utah;
I have owned almost all calibers, except 300 WIN mag, which my buddy had, and my favorite for all was my 7MM REM. MAG.
I had a 22-250, a .270 win, and a 7MM REM MAG.

You can grab either of these guns, and shoot them all the same, as holdover goes, they are so close to each other;

I killed more mulies and Elk with my 7mm than my buddy did with his 300 win mag cause he didnt like shooting it; not that the 7MM was a peach to shoot;

AS for over all kills?

.270 WIN by far, then my .243 WIN (my 243 outshot his 300)
 
by the way, I agree about shooting a deer at 600 yds, even with a 7MM OR a 300 MAG;

I need a good blackpowder load for my CVA 209 PRO MAGNUM .50 cal; (want to shoot Blackhorn 209 powder)
(I also want to shoot BARNES TMZ .45 sabot);
anyone have any experience with this load?
 
your right, nothing based on the 308 is bad;
but dont forget the venerable 30-06;
the ONLY REASON the U.S. went with .308 was because of NATO;
The .308 is also known as the 7.62 NATO cartridge, which the U.S. agreed to adopt so all of NATO could use the same round;
IT'S NOT THE SAME AS THE 30-06, NOR IS IT AS POWERFUL!!!
Check your ballistic tables; It comes close, if you think 200ft. lbs. is close at range;

Just like .243 is MUCH,MUCH more powerful than the .223
(check the ballistics);
AND,,!!! the.243 is a neck down .308?!!!
Conversion would be seamless across platforms;

Not everyone has the option of sneaking around for a better/closer shot. Here in the farm country,lots of us have a small piece of land to hunt. Sitting in a box blind is very common,you either make the shot or let it ride.

The whole world is not the same when it comes to hunting,condtions are diff all over.

As far as shooting 5-600 yard deer, that's up to the shooter. I know guys that can pull it off and some can't even do 100 yards.
 
I like the splat factor of the 25-06 over the boring 308. The 100gr. bullets and less is where the 25-06 shines. 120gr bullets make the 25-06 a 270Win. wannabe and it will not measure up to the great 270Win. loaded with the classic 130gr. bullet. The way I see it , if the 220 swift can't git it done , you have to go with a 270Win. Anything more is for ego and disapointment.

Truth is all suitable modern big game calibers will work on deer. IMO no shot should be taken at a game animal at 600 yds with any caliber. Its just too risky to pull off a perfect humane kill at extreme distances for the average hunter, not saying it cant be done effectively, it just leaves to much margin for error on a average shooter. Get closer or dont shoot! On caliber I say get a good 30.06 and be done! Good to go for anything in NA
 
Get a .30-06-------its more better than those 2 listed

My main deer rifle is a Rem. 700 ADL Wal-Mart special in 30-06 with crap black plastic stock. It is my beat-up working gun I have tuned to my specs
with a 3x9 Leo. Would never sell it. It is the right tool for the way I hunt.
I sill recommend a 270Win over my 06. The 270Win is the better deer/varmit
cartridge and more accurate out of the box than an 06 in my experiance. The 130gr 270 bullet works well on varmits and deer. The 06 and the 180gr. works better deer/elk. I lost count of the jack rabbits I cut in two with a 270.
