25-06 or 7mm 08 for Encore pistol

ciao

New member
I Want to buy a 15" barell for my Encore and having trouble picking out a round that I can use for deer and maybe coyotes. I am new to both of these rounds and I need some input on both. I will be hunting mostly farm land in Upstae NY, Wooded areas and open fields. What is a good all around round for the Encore pistol for deer possibly coyotes. Whats the difference between the two?

In my opinion the 25-06 would not be as good in the 15" barrel lenght as the 7-08. Do you handload? That makes a difference.

from my reading (and understanding)
the 308 winchester was designed for the military for use in shorter barrels(about 20")for the machine guns.
the 7mm08 would also in turn work better in the shorter barrel then the 25-06
i have also read tests on the fps vs powder used for the encore pistol barrls and the cases based on the 308 had a higher efficency then the others
hope this helps
have fun todd

Go with the 7mm-08 and don't look back. 120-140 gr bullets will work for everything you are wanting to do. Recoil is very managable in the 15" Encore.

I bought a used Bullberry 7-08 from a fellow silhouette shooter from South Dakota and shot a deer with factory ammo at 210 yds lasered. It liked the Federal ammo. I didn't have dies yet so I had to shoot store bought /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

ciao,

In the same general area as you..........

I've got the 7mm08 in a Savage Striker and it's been my deer rig for several years now. I use 120gr handloads, and commercially, I'm sure there's something available off the shelf, that will suit you.

I've used the .308 for many years at work, and it, or anything based on that cartridge, is just inherently accurate hands down.
I'd almost bet that the 7mm08 is more accurate overall, than it's parent cartridge.

Take care,
Bob

Thanks for all the input. I am going to lean towards the 7mm 08. I also want to get a scope for the gun. What powered scope would be good for the 7mm 08 15" Encore rig? Do you have to go with a pistol scope or rifle? I also do want to break the bank , but then again I Want something that will work well for around $300 range.

you'll need a pistol scope
a varible scope is the way to go, some where in the area of 2 to 6
it hard to hit somthing in the woods running with a 3x scope

I worked with a couple 7mm-08 T/C Encores over the years. One was a 12" Custom Shop Barrel and the other was a 15" Factory Barrel. Both were pleasantly accurate. I worked up a couple of good handloads for the 12" Barrel, 120gr. & 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips both loaded with H-4895. 5 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench were under an inch. In the 15" Barrel I just shot factory ammo (Federal Power Shok if I remember right) and it too shot in the 1 inch neighborhood.

I am currently working with a 15" Encore in .243 Winchester. So far I have tested 3 Handloads and 2 Factory Rounds in this Barrel. 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with Hodgdon's Varget shoot great at a muzzle velocity of 3240 FPS. 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzers loaded with Hodgdon H-4895 are quite accurate at a muzzle velocity of 2920 FPS.

With a little luck I hope to take a Whitetail or two with this barrel with the 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzers and a Coyote or two with the 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips.

I would not opt for the .25-06 in a 15" Barrel. In a .25 Caliber Bore 15" long there is just no way you can burn all the powder the .25-06 case holds and do it efficiently.

Good luck

Larry

ciao,

Well, I'll agree with the variable choice. The decision would mainly hinge on what you would be doing with the gun overall. Most of my variables are 2X7's, or 2X8's.

Years ago, after a chat with the fella's at SSK Handcannons, their recommendation, at that time, was (believe it or not), a Simmons 2X8. I bought two, and have had them on some really hard pounders. They're still alive and well, and in current use. They're the old version, and not made the same any longer, so knowing that, I haven't bought one since, so who knows.

If you're looking at $300.00 as a maximum limit, I'd choose a Weaver variable.
That's what I've got on my 15" Encore .243, and it's held up very nicely.
The optics are crystal clear, and the field of view is almost as wide as my Burris, for a much smaller scope.

I've given the new (Meade) Weaver's a try at the behest of a good buddy, during an FBI sniper academy we attended together. He's constantly testing gun components, bipods, scopes, mounts, etc., for police work, and he told me I ought to try the new Weaver's as their V16 & 24 lines were every bit as good as all but the top of the Leupold, Burris and Nikon lines. I did, and he was right.
The top of the Weaver line, the "Grand Slams", I think, are even better than the others and I love their features even more so.

My one older 2X7 Burris (that's on my Striker 7mm08) is a great scope, and has an adjustable objective (which usefulness is in question on a handgun scope), but I think any of those higher magnification Burris handgun scopes are a bit over the amount you mentioned.

Of the others like Nikon, Leupold, and Bushnell, etc., they'e also great scopes, but again, their prices are an issue. You can always go used, if you know a scopes been taken care of. I never buy used unless I know it's history.

Using a rifle scope has been done by some, and if you're quick to move your face if need be, great, but I've started using pistol scopes when they first came out, and really haven't had a problem.
I personally wouldn't use a rifle scope on some of the guns I have. I've had a broken nose in the past, and I know what that feels like.....hopefully never again.
Many have described that they sight close through the scope, then back off so they can only see the center....what's the use in that ?

Oh well, enough babbling....good luck,
Bob
