built a 9 twist 26in 25-06. throated long for the heavy bullets.
have been planning to use the sierra 120 gr hpbt gameking. anybody using these? low bc's though.
are the nosler bt's holding together?
any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I gave up on that bullet pretty quickly. I had good luck with the 117 gr game king. Berger also makes a nice 115 gr VLD for hunting though I haven't tried them hunting yet.

javy, that Sierra 120g HPBT is one of the very toughest cup and core bullets, second would be the 120g Hornady HP.

117g Sierra is a great bullet, your barrel will like the flat base or the BT version.

I would encourage you to try R#25 with a Fed 215(if you can find any) or a Win mag primer, great speed with extremes in accuracy.

shots this year will not be over 300 from a box blind with proper elbow rest.., under most circumstances there will be time to evaluate and place the shot...high shoulder. that is the reason for a tough bullet.

going to try some 120 partitions and sierra 117's also.

Do'nt have any rl-25, have retumbo loaded to test this week.

thanks guys

The Nosler line was a good perform too.

Same here, love the accubond. Reload mine over 53.5 gr's of RL 22, shoots like a dream. Have family members and a close friend that shoot this also, all have 300 + yard clean kills with them. I don't think you can wrong with any quality bullet anymore if put in the right place and especially if you stay under that 300 yard mark

Just offered for what it is worth. Several years ago a friend attended the annual SHOT show in Las Vegas. I had had some cup and core separations shooting the Sierra Pro Hunters, and my buddy told the sales agent I was off the Sierras like a dirty shirt.

What my buddy said the salesman claimed was that Sierras, across the product line, are not made to be driven above 3K, as that is about the limit of most rifles. I don't know if that is still the case, but at one point in time it was represented as fact.

I have found that there are plenty of bullets that shoot just as well for me and hold together much better. Further, deer, pigs, and so forth are not, and never were, made of plate steel. Put the bullet where it belongs and down they go. And that is incredibly true with the high shoulder shot. I just never had enough confidence to do that. I shoot lungs. Not much rib meat on a deer anyway, and with hogs, it is the head. That is the biggest part of them.

Good luck with whatever you choose to shoot. The animal just deserves to die quickly and cleanly, and that is more a function of bullet placement than bullet design, in my estimation.

some years ago, I had a Texan gunsmith put together a custom 25/06 with a 12 twist barrel on his insistence...I did not understand the 12T idea but with 6 other guys in the deer camp having that exact same rifle, I went along.

Ok, 26" Shilen 12Twist, #5 countour gave the following loads that all the guys shot with the Shilen 12 twist

100g Sierra flat base
63.0g of R#25
Fed 215
Win brass, new neck sized
bullet seated to touch the lands
3600 fps
Grouped in the high 2's
brass was neck sized only for follow up confirmation shots

117g Sierra Flat base
58g of R#25, and this is a safe working max load for this rifle with full length sizing needed after the firing of new Winchester brass
3350 fps
Grouped in the 4's

All loads had very low standard deviation.

WARNING: I backed off 5.0g and the load of 58.0g was max in my Rem 700 with the 100g Sierra.

Also, in the 12 Twist, these were the only 100g and 117g bullets that would stabilize. All 85's would stabilize of course.

Nephew ended up with the rifle, he is still killing deer and hogs with it. That 117g Sierra Flat base is one whale of a bullet.

I am considering a 25 cal of some sort to use with the Sierra 90gr BK. The idea is a good BC bullet with nice, rapid expansion for LR varmint use. Not entirely sure if I want to stay with the longer '06 case, maybe a 25 Super or a 25-284...? At anyrate, never had a quarter bore, so I'd like to build one at some point.

Living in Ohio where we can't hunt deer with rifle I shoot a lot of 85 gr to 90 gr bullets through my .25-06 for groundhogs. These have been my favorites.

Never had the ambition to mess with any other .257 cal, I have been able to move a 85 gr bullet at 3650 fps out of my rifle. Even though I never saw the hits through the scope I could tell the hit as it made a sound like slapping a board against water.
