i want to re-barrel a long action and i want a coyote/ deer gun i have narowed it down to these two what are your guys' views on both and the pros and cons. i am a big 25-06 fan but the swede realy gets my attention what should i do?

I haven't researched it tonight but I suspect that bullets and brass are a bit easier to find for the 25-06, though I've heard the Swede's a good round.

I wouldn't trade my 25---it's a flat shooting cartridge.

I think your choices are pretty equal. Recoil is to close to call. I like the heavier 6.5 bullet choices over the 25-06 for deer. But looking a little further I'd make it a 6.5/284.

on a LA, why not a 6.5-06?

I like the swedes,..I have a standard and an ackely improved version. Great shooters that put game DOWN.

I trust the 6,5x55 as my work horse for just about everything. I have killed moose, black bear, wild boar, beavers, seals, fallow deer and plenty of roe deer with it and with a good bullet it can be trusted to do a good job. The last few years I have been sticking to a Norma Oryx bullet. I also use it to kill a lot of small game with FMJ's. Mostly forest grouse for eating. That also works well.

It is a little bit overkill on red foxes and that without delivering the trajectory of a fast .22 caliber, so it has not been ideal there. I have used both expanding bullets and FMJ's on them. But with our gun laws it is hard to have an ideal gun for each hunt...

Can't help you with the comparison, this is the one I have tried, but I have used it a lot and I don't think you can go wrong with a 6,5x55 unless perhaps if you are looking for a flat trajectory and minimum fur damage. But I guess I may be partial to the old Swede... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ya know, I have had a 25-06 for 30 years and it's a great shooter. But recently I picked up a Remmy 721 rebarreled in 6.5x55, unfortunately I have not had time to test it out. Here are my limited thoughts on this caliber. It's been around for..... oh, let's see, a dang long time and from what I've read, it's a very versatile round not to mention extremely accurate. It has a very loyal following to those that have chosen it and one of the most used calibers in the European countries.

I like it as it has a wider variety of bullet bullets than the 25-06, however, the 25-06 has stopped everything I've shot with it, only needing one round to accomplish the task. The 6.5 will launch a heavier bullet , so in the wind it may be a better performer, but it has some big shoes to fill up against the 25. I'll never part with my 25 M77 Varmint rig, it's my baby, The 6.5 is interesting to me and I hope to get around to shooting it soon.

All in all, I know that is not much help, but I'm lonely and I needed something to talk about /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

For strictly deer/coyote at longer ranges you couldn't go wrong with the 25-06. BUT- The 6.5 X 55 is a great classic round that is perfectly capable of taking larger game with mild report and recoil. If you want high velocity/longer range performance, go with the 25-06. But be careful about getting a Swede, its easy to like....

Hi,here are two with the same bullet weight. The frist is the 25-06 then the 6.5x55 Swede. As you can see not much diff. And if the swede had a longer bbl.it would be even closer.Hope this helps thanks Clint.
