what does everyone think about the 25-06 as a whitetail round. right now i use a 300 rum but im thinking about getting a less extreme caliber.
 
Works good in Texas! I know several guys that use it for everything they hunt. I used to have one and really liked it. I have to admit though, I've been thinking of the .257 Weatherby or even the dreaded .257 STW! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I've used a 25-06 here in Texas for WT, Fallow, Axis, Blackbuck, and hogs. Nice caliber, and lays them down nicely. I'm partial to the 100gr TSX.
 
I shot my deer this year with a buddies 25-06. I am now looking for a 25-06 of my own.
It shoots fast and flat. This deer did not take a step after being hit.
My friend has yet to have one run on him. One rolled down a hill, but not run. Great round for deer.
 
I gave my brother a Savage varminter in .25-06 a few years ago, many years ago now that I think about it.

It's his only centerfire rifle and he has used it to kill all sorts of things, many from a long ways off. He's one of those folks who only shoots when there is something to shoot at, he never practices and never misses.

He's killed deer a long ways off with it, including this big Kansas whitetail catty corner across a 40 acre feild (well over 400 yards).

I have a Ruger M77 in 25-06 and simply love it. The last 3 deer I have shot with it have run a combine 35 yards. Two were whitetails in Texas, and the other was a 250 yd shot at a Muley in Utah. 120 grain NPs flat put 'em on the ground!
 
I was in the exact same situation as you. I was shooting a .300 Win Mag and wanted something less extreme. So I bought a 25-06 and did not regret it a bit.

The 25-06 is a much more "pleasant" gun to shoot.
 
Hi FOsteology i am new to a 25 06 i got 4 boxes of the Win 90gr factory ammo cheap. I was going to shoot up to get the brass and to break my barrel in. I am wanting to get some of the Barnes 100gr TSX bullets to load for it. I want one load for coyotes/deer. I bought 400 rds of 85gr BT bullets too when i got the gun and a can of Reloader 19 to loaded the 85gr with. Until i seen what the TSX will do. I got a 300 wby mag i left it in the safe and started hunting with this new gun. VM
 
Great round and will get the job done without question.

For what it's worth I think a .270 is too much for whitetails anyway. I use it though.
 
I have a Rem. Sendero that I had converted to 25-06AI last
summer, I could not just leave well enough alone. The 25-06
is a great caliber, one of the best of the longer range
& windy day varmiters & a great Deer/Antelope round. I
used this gun in my last 4 trips to Wyoming & it never
dissapoints. I have used 120 Gr. Nos. Part. the most but
also 100TSX & 115TSX & years ago the 117 Sierra Boattails.
The norm is for Deer/Antelope to expire quickly, in fact, I
have seen more bang-flops with this round than any other for some reason.

The current & possibly the permanent bullet of choice is the 125Gr. Wildcat bullet for my AI. It has a BC comparable
to a .30 cal 200MK, which is unheard of in a .25 cal., it
penetrates adaquately for Deer, yet expands way out there
for Varmits & has Target accuracy. This bullet handles all of my 25 cal needs in spades. I push this bullet at 3,250
FPS. The only thing to possibly watch with this bullet is if you shoot a really big Buck at less than 100 yards, you
might double Lung it instead of shooting it in the near
shoulder, I would do that anyway to not waste meat.
 
I have a Ruger M&&, Target grey, varmint model in .25-06. What a sweet roung. I load up 75 gr. bullets for varmints. The only problem with the 25-06 is that it keeps me from buying the newer, sexier things like the 25 WSSM. Of course, I have the same problem with my .270 Wins and my .30-06s. Mayber now that the .30-06 round is a hundred years old, I'll have to retire it. LOL
 
I would definitely buy another 25.06. I have shot several with mine over the last 5 years and the farthest one has made it was 30 steps. I have not made any long shot, the longest being 200 yds but definitely puts the hurt on deear and yotes.
 
I love a .25 for whitetails. My main rifle is chambered in 257 AI and is loaded a tad hotter than a 25-05. I shot a 257 Roberts for years before going to the Improved version. I also used a Ruger 25-06 for awhile and it also took its' share of critters. Good all around caliber. I prefer 100 grain bullets in mine. So far the 257AI has taken game at my longest distances; pronghorn 283yds, whitetail 319.
 
I don't know if I've ever met anyone who has seriously used a 25-06 that doesn't like it. I bought a Browning Composite Stalker over 10 years ago and I absolutely love it. It is the most accurate out-of-the-box rifle I have ever owned - and that has been many over the years. I shoot 100 grain Speer BTSP's. When I do my part, this little rifle will group 5/8" to 1/2" 3-shot groups at 100 yards. I have taken 5 antelope in Wyoming with it, one whitetail deer, two turkeys and several groundhogs and crows. The longest shot I made was an honest (Rangefinder Measured) 300 yards on an Antelope buck (pictured). I have a Leupold 3.5 X 10 scope on it.
