25-20 for rabbit hunting whada ya think ?

It would be a terrible rabbit gun, so sell it to me so you won't have to suffer the embarassment of people knowing you have one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Smitty, give it a shot. I bet it will do just fine. What have you got to lose? Most likely it will be a whole new experience. Lot's of nostalsia. Let us know how it goes.

My dad has a collection of Savage model 23's.

He has both the 25-20 and the 32-20 models B and C? Im not sure on the models, but anyways they are the same cartridge just diffrent bullet diameters. The 32-20 is quite effective on squirrels no matter where you hit them as well as on rabbits. I have yet to kill anything with the 25-20 but I know it would kill a rabbit. Hit it in the head because if you dont it will rip a rabbit in half at close range.

Havn't heard of that one in a long time. An uncle had one when I was growing up that he let me use a few times. Never got a shot at anything with it though. Had fun with it as did most of his kids and grandkids. Don't know what happened to it when he died.

Mine's a M94 Marlin. As was sad earlier, head shots only! I use Lyman 257420 GC cast bullets. That flat nose will sure ruin the makin's of rabbit stew!

For cheap ammo, try loading cast bullets. The Lyman 257420 is a flat nosed gas check bullet that weighs about 72 gr. checked, lubed and ready to go out of my alloy. I heat treat them by running the mould hot and dropping them into a bucket of water right out of the mould. For safety reasons, I place the bucket behind me so I have to turn around to drop them into the water. Helps keep any splashing out of the pot! Gas checks run maybe a penney and a half and I got the wheel weights free years ago. Makes a very cheap load that is more than effective on anything you'd want to use the 25-20 on.

We reload for my dads 25-20. We use those midway 86g grain flat nose for it. 10.5 grains of IMR 4198 with cci small rifle primers. This load works well for its intended purpose of making the rifle shoot. But I have no idea if it is a max load or what not.

I load the cast bullet mentioned above with 13 gr 4198. Got the load out of my old Lyman load book. Speer makes a good jacketed bullet for the 25-20, 75gr. I think. You can buy the bulk 86 gr. flat nose that Rem. and Win. makes from places like Midway, and some of the other online outlets.

I have an original 1894 Marlin made in 1895. Not much rifling left. Didn't want to shoot jacketed bullets in it. Tried an 80gr lead plainbase from R&R bullets. 4grn's Unique makes 1420fps. Not much noise. 2" grps at 50yds. Should make a good rabbit load.
