25-280 ??? question

I have a friend that inherited a wildcat rifle and does not know how to reload it. I was told that it is a 280 case necked down to a 25 caliber (25 sps?). The shoulder has been moved closer to the mouth, like a Weatherby case. He was given the dies for it. It was made in North Dakota. If you are famiar with this setup, please share some reloading data for it. Would you start out with a 25-06 load, go up or down in powder?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sidewinder,

I am a bit confused by this partciualr round, as I have never heard of it before. Both the .280 Rem and the 25-06 Rem are based off of the 30-06 case. So in essence, it sounds as though your friend just has a 25-06 with the shoulder blown foreward. This, I imagine, would be very similar ballistically to the 25-06 Ackley Improved. Like the Ackley version, he may be able to start out with regular 25-06 brass and fire form them to his chamber. Don't quote me on this one though, because I have no idea what the headspace considerations for this gun would be.
But the Ackley load data would probably get him started.

If it has a 40 degree shoulder it is probably the 25-280AI which as Kyle pointed out is basically the same as a 25-06AI. When fireforming for the AI chamberings you generally want to use the max load for the parent chambering, anything less will not fully form the AI case.

And welcome to the board Kyle! D)

Thanks for the help guys! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif I'll see if he wants to start with the 25-06 AI load. I'll see if he has a name of the gunsmith.

i know the gunsmith who perfected this round. his name is greg johnson from minot north dakota. the sps designation means south prairie special. south prairie is a little bump in the road south of minot. you can contact greg @ 701-839-8284. he closed up shop a few months ago but still does work on the side. greg is an excellent smith. he built 7 rifles for me and they are all outstanding shooters.

good luck.
