25-45 sharps load data Help with 117gr Hornady Round nose

Loaded 20 Rounds . Put 5 Rounds threw Chrony . and put 15 Rounds on paper @ 100 Yrd.
25.7 Grn Reloader 10x / 87 Grn. Speer TNT / OAL 2.275
( Barrel length 16" ) and using .30 Cal Suppressor over the muzzle / using factory RR 2-stage trigger .
edit add:
Also,Rounds were all Crimped used with, Lee collet Crimp Die . Brass sized is ( 02 Guatemalan ) with small flash hole . Primers post firing, were all sitting proud with nice round edges .

Scope used is only a ( 1-6 power ) vortex strike eagle with the upside-down horseshoe Ret . . So I was not really trying to make a point of trying to be as Tight as I possibly could on the group size . But this is scope I am going to take this round out in the field and hunt with .
It a little slow on the Vel. but the 2700 fps area seems to be a good Node & I am about out of room for stuffing more powder Volume in the Case.

Chrony. 5 rounds . ( 1st Round Cold Bore, dirty ) for the day .. 2704 fps / with the low 2694 fps .

.. ( 15 ) Round Group @ 100 yrd .

Id say you have bragging rights with that group for not really trying..good shooting!
What are you using for a magazine? And are you planning on using the gun for hunting deer or anything else up there?

I pretty positive I could have knocked that group size down by half with popping on one of my better scopes with more power and finer Reticle. . That model 1-6x Vortex has some pretty 'thick' Ret. & subtension lines also, that are about 1 MOA thick at 100 yrd . BUT it is nice big and bold and that what I like in a short range/low power scope .

Magazine is a old straight body 20-Round steel, without that internal front-stiffener plate you find in the inside front of .223 Alum. body Mags .
Just Nighttime Coyotes . using this Cal. and AR for a change, in what I am shooting them with now .

The AR15 platform is 'REALLY' holding this 24x45 sharps Round down . It would really shine bright, (for example) if you put it in a Boltaction with a AICS magazine compatible Modular Chassis . With about 20" to 22" barrel length . You could really stretch-out the OAL with also using more powder . It would also be better to run/push the heavier .257's also if you shoose to . The .223 AICS Mags. and big OAL they have would set this Round free .
I got an extra XLR shortaction with also .223 Action and some .223/AICS mags laying around, that I starting to think about doing a Remage barrel with Nut, with this Cal. . I think it would be a real BadAss .

Well I did some testing thursday, loaded 5 rnds @ 22.0 grs of Rl 7 2.29long, averaged 2453 with 20" tube. With the new asc mag rounds would not feed and no lock back on last round!
With AA2200 @ 23.5 grs loaded to 2.29, I averaged 2451 it fed ok but no lock back!
Tried AA200 @24 grs loaded to 2.29 , averaged 2508, had one primer blow in a case marked 5.56 cbc ? All other case and primers looked good except that odd ball for that load. Used 450 primers, test was for speed and function only. Tried three rounds @ 22.5 of Rl 7 and was too hot of load, 2 out 3 blown primers and loaded to same length as others. The 117 is somewhat tempermental in this experience!
The other rounds of 87 speer hot core loaded @ 27.9 grs of 2230, loaded to 2.24 with 450 primers shot superbly and functioned the same! Averaged 2811fps 20" tube. Mike

I believe the 117 is best loaded short. I had two that didn't like feeding on the bolt drop. No issues with the 2.260.

Open the block up and that should handle the lock back. I'm sure we have the same port size so that should cure it.

Those Speers sound like the berries.

Im supposed to get the 110 ftx monday, any idea what you would run those with? I called hornady and they said they are 1.10" long.

Powder wise? I'd look at AA 2230 and 2200 and some RL10. Accurate /Western has some 100 grain 6X45 loads. I'd start out at MAX with those and maybe go up to two grains above those. Additionally I'd pick the faster loadings for the 117 and go for it with a bit on top meeting the 100 grain 6X45 data about half way. .Length wise maybe at 2.70 or 2.80.

SAAMI it may be but I wildcat it is in the world of data. My fingers , my toes and my guns. YMMV

Sounds good I did find a load for a 110 accubond for 2200 @ 24.5grs 2422fps, 2.26" from a 16" tube! That 100 grn load for the 6x45 is a berger so you know those are long lennies. I know the accubond is longer than the hornady. From now on Im going with new brass for one thing and Im going to rerun 117s with new brass as well!

Thanks Greg..Mike

Hey Greg, brown guy just dropped off the ftx rounds I ordered! They mic at 1.09 and with a 1.745 casing the cannulure is right at the neck. Lol you can pull the rubber meplat/tip out with your finger nails and put it back in..amazing!
Without it it looks like a pretty wicked hollow point and makes it 1.009 inches long but Ill leave them in for testing purposes....Mike
They will be good at 2.26 for sure!

I have a dummy round that measures 1.759 with just a smidge of cannulure showing it measures 2.272 col. If you trim the case to 1.7425 it will be perfect for a col of 2.26 crimped!

I'd stick that in a 2.300 magazine and shoot it. No tip shaving for me. (I'm a good tipper BTW.

still A2200 for me get great results . But Out of curiosity with another common powder got laying around . Tried some ( Win. 748 ) just to see how that burn reacted out a .257 hole and 16" barrel .
. A heavier .25 bullet and 20" to 24"longer Tube might get better results on Win.748 . But it not complementary to the lighter weight 87 grn. bullets and short 16" tube . I poured Cramming-in ( 27 grn. ) with a 'light' crunch and it struggled to achieve 2650 Vel . out the Muzzle .

I just loaded some 100gr sierra's, 23.5 grs. of Exterminator, 10 shot average 2530fps. 18" barrel suppressed. Accuracy potential looks good also.

I have been reading for some time, first posting.

Thanks for all the entertaining and informative posts and effort on these loads... I am unable to find 2200 powder here, but I have 2230 and tried some last weekend with excellent results. As I dont have data its slow going starting lo and working up. But all cycled bolt and ALL have been ragged hole shooters @ 50 yards.

I have been loading for this Sharps just over a year now for my buddies barrel. I just got mine last month and have found a couple promising loads but they still need work. Benchmark, H335 and now 2230 seem to be top powders. My buddy is hooked on the 87g Speer...mostly cause the factory uses it. I like the 90g Sierra HPBT GK as I have used it in the 250 Savage years ago with good results.

BTW anyone know if there is changes since Sierra stopped crimping the HP tips?

27g Benchmark is a small ragged hole @ 50 with these 90g SGK bullets from my 20" HBAR barrel. That load hits 2750+ fps.
I have only pushed 2230 to 25g and no pressure signs at web or primers, so more is in order. But that load is 2625 fps.

I also loaded up some 117RN in a ladder, starting @ 21, but left them on my bench... CRS sux.

Well I see not allot of intrest in this one anymore...

I'm still troopin' along here enjoying it!

I see Midway has 110 FTX on clearance so I grabbed a couple boxes and they seem to be a very goot fit in the case allowing seating to 2.260 and a lil longer while still using the cannalure.

Gonna work up some loads and try them this weekend.

Looks very good. A range report will be nice. Don't let that cannelure limit you in experimenting. It's pretty transparent for our needs especially when teamed with mags that hold 2.316.

New to the forum here. This thread pushed me over the edge from lurker to poster. In the building stage using an 18" BHW I got on sale that was crazy cheap....that finally forced my hand to try the 25-45 sharps game.
Thanks for all the data/info gents.

Anyone mind putting a set of calipers on one of their 110gr FTXs laying around the bench?

I have all my build parts gathered and a selection of reload components. I've been shopping for bullets specifically. This caliber is very interesting to me w/respect to useful medium range (300 yds or less)/medium game (deer/small hogs). I have a smattering of bullets and selection of ACS mags to allow for atypical cartridge length numbers. The simple question.... I can't find a spec length of the Hornady 110gr FTX. I have some 100gr Swift Scirocco on hand and would like to compare lengths. The swifts measure 1.12".Thanks in advance!
