Has anyone tried the 25 STW and what kind of Vel and Accuracy did you get? I was thinking of building a long range rifle in this cal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have no experience with it.

Better bullet selection with the 7mm. If you are wanting a longrange rig I would think that would be your number one concern.

Besides, the 7 STW ain't no slouch.

Total waste of time and money. Barrel life is nil and the caliber doesn't offer any real long range target bullets such as the 6.5, 7mm or 30 caliber.

If your looking for a long range hunting rifle then it's hard to beat the 300 Ultra-mag pushing a 180 grain high BC bullet at 3300 fps. For target work out to a thousand yards the 6.5 by 284 seems to be garnering lots of records.

My 2 cents.

Its the ultimate varmint rifle. I have one that has about 800 rounds thru it, the throat don't really look that bad. I've been think about setting the barrel back and cutting a fresh chamber in it, inasmuch as it doesn't cost me anything but time to do it. I figure if the rifle is made right you can get about 3000+ rounds (2 set backs)before replacing the barrel on it. The velocity is outstanding, 100 grain Nosler BT at 3900, turns a hunting bullet into a varmint bullet. My 1000 yard guns are in 6.5 and 30 cal.

you have another alternative which I will try and explain.

257 Weatherby with zero freebore will out of a 26" barrel will push the 100g bullets at 3800-3850. I had the reamer ground with a 0.2575 throat, also. Accuracy was amazing with 100g Sierra Spt BT, 100g Sierra Match, 100g Nosler Ballistic tips, and 100g Partitions shot 1/2" all at speeds over 3800-.3850 fps.

A friend borrowed the reamer and chambered a 30" 12 twist hart barrel with it, and he shoots chucks at 4000 fps with the 100g Sierra's.

To make matters a little easier, instead of buying the soft Norma (weatherby) brass, neck down Winchester 7 Mag brass and have the reamer ground to the neck length that the 7 Mag brass necks down to which is about .040-.060 shorter than the Weatherby brass. The New Winchester 7 Mag brass will size down and perfectly form the double radius of the Weatherby case.

I shot the 85's at 4130 fps with amazing accuracy with AA3100.

It is hard to believe the accuracy with speed that this round has.

I and my friend shoot the same load, 71.5g of R#22 with the 100's.

None of the coyotes did the yip and spin thing when shot with this load, but there was a lot of hair flying in the air!

for some reason the 25 cal bore just doesnt' have the bullets to really make sense to me, I also find the speeds not all that impressive its too big for a good varminter, ie the .244 is better with better bullets and faster speeds for a given bc of a bullet, its too small for big game, what you want is something in a 6.5 cal, a 140 berger vld at 3200 is hella potent at any range, and will smoke anything a .25 bore can do, if you wanna use it for a varminter load it with light bullets to nearly 4k, go 264 win mag or 6.5 stw if you really wanna hotrod

I have the 7mm STW , 264 Win Mag , 270 WSM , 338 RUM, 300 RUM, 270 Win , 240 WBY MAG , 308 Win , 30-06 , 7mm Rem Mag , 6mm Rem , 243 Win, 257 Ack , 280 Ack , 338-06 ACK, 22-250 Ack , 223 Rem , 7mm-08, 25-06, so you can see i have something for just about everything so want something different . I purchased the Reamer today and will do the work myself. I will use a Lilja SS barrel and may use the Action off my Rem 700 7Mag since i very seldom use this rifle . I will use the 25 STW for a long range deer rifle with the Barnes 100 gr Triple Shock or the Lost River J36 100 gr. I personally don't care how long the barrel last with this hot rod cal . Sometime you have to sacrifice for performance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

And every one of those rifles is "left-handed".

Hoggy

Lost River Ballistic Technologies Inc makes the 100-grain J-36 bullet it has an ballistic coefficient of .532. The are not cheap about 2 dollars each.

It sounds as though you have most of if not all the bases covered and have a surplus of time and money but to go thru all that and build it backwards well it just don't seem rite /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Just can't have to many rifles. The different between a man and a boy is the price of his toys. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It will take a few days to get it done. The reamer is now on the way and should receive sometime next week then i have to purchase a barrel blank. I was wanting to use a Number 3 contour Lilja but Midway is out and only have a Number 4 contour in stock. If i order a barrel from Lilja it will take weeks before i would receive it. The dies Midway has in stock, RCBS and they run 142.00 a set. Nothing is cheap these days. Wish someone on the forum had a set for sell. Will post on the progress when i get started. I have a new Bead Blasting Cabinet i have to put together, purchased back in the winter but have had the time to assemble. Hell being retired just don't have time for anything but hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
