257 Roberts in Short Action Savage

Is it possible to squeeze the 257 Roberts into a short action Savage? I am pondering on building a 257 Bob on a Savage action and I prefer the compactness of the short action over the long action.

Absolutely. A Savage short action isn't very short. It's much longer than a Rem. short action and closer in length to the long Remington action.

Edit: Actually, that statement should be qualified..... it depends on what bullets you want to use. Lighter bullets, fine. My .257AI (not a Savage) uses 87TNTs seated just shy of the lands in a chamber with 0 freebore. Those loads will fit the Savage short magazine. Heavier bullets seated for a longer throated gun probably wouldn't fit. For that you'd want a long action, and those things are significantly longer than a Rem. long action. But used 110's aren't too hard to find at a good price.

It is the receiver length that I am concerned with. Is it long enough to accomodate the 257 Roberts round? Remington chambered 257Roberts in their long actions.

My most recent custom rifle is a 257 Roberts built on a Remington 700 Short Action.
When you have the rifle built, make sure that you tell the gunsmith that you want the leade cut so you can have the bullet of your choice seated in the case and feed through the magazine with the bullet as close to the barrel lands as you want it to be. For me, I wanted the 100 grain Nosler Partition to be .010 from the lands, as the bullet is seated in the case, so it feeds through the magazine.
That is the most important stipulation in specing out your rifle, along with the other things you want.
I like the compactness of the short action also.

I would be selective on who did the chamber work, due to the
Great reamer they will have, or a really lousy one.

It would be good money spent to have a reamer ground to your own spec's, that way you can make sure that you will get the most out of your 257 Bob.

Good luck!

Someone is gonna hate this, the roberts is really a semilong action. With the parent 57mm case it's right in between most actions. I really believe that is good as the roberts is the 260 is exactly what Ned Roberts had in mind. It is a short action. It honestly works as well or better with 120 grain bullets and pretty darn good with 100 and 140's.(try that with a 25) If not that then the 250 savage or 250AI is about as efficient as you can get. It will fit into a short action really well and shoot up to 100 grain bullets right up with the roberts with less powder. Denny

I have the Roberts chambered in a Remington 722....which was the short action version of the 721. I have absolutely no problems chambering any Roberts round.

I re-barreled a Savage Model 16, in factory 22-250 Rem,
with a 6mm Rem, which is the same parent case, as the 257
Roberts, and have absolutely no issues with a COL, where
the bullet is in the lands, fitting in the magazine. I have
played with the idea of getting a 257 Bob barrel, for it,
but I have a really sweet Tikka M695, in 25-06 Rem, and
at the moment don't feel the need for another .257 caliber
rifle. But I don't believe you will have any problems
with a 257 Roberts barrel, in the Savage short action.
You may want to order a barrel chambered with a shorter throat,
just in case the 120 gr. bullets get a bit tight in the
magazine.
