Is the 257 Roberts a SA or LA?

Does anyone have experience with the Remington 700 SF limited edition 257 Roberts? I am seriously considering getting one and wondered if they are bedded nicely and shoot out of the box as claimed.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

I have a Ruger 77 and its a short action, I have used IMR 4064 and H414 in her, presently Im shooting a 85gr Nosler BT, so far its been mainly a groundhog rifle but Im guessing it would make a nice yote rifle.

257 is one of those old stand bys you never here a bad word about. Have
a gunsmith friend that has two or three of them for antelope and deer.

I had a custom .257 on a Mauser SA that was the best deer gun I owned in the late 1970s. 5/8" groups at 100 with my handloads, sold it in the 90s.
Course I cant answer the remington question.

Can't answer the Remington question either... My "BOB" is a Spanish small ring mauser and has been my "go to" deer rifle for about 40 years... Enough said...

My cousin had one it shot well, he never kept anything
long enough for the new to wear off... but I've always
said a 257 Roberts is a great round, but nothing the
25-06 Rem can't do better but, then again there's
the 257 Weatherby Magnum.......I've kicked my self
more that once for not buying a limited edition
though, if it's what you want I'd get it......
I can't think of a single reason you wouldn't
like it......

I don't know bout the roberts but my brother has a .257 weatherby mag and it is one deer killin machine. The ballistics on the weatherby out do the roberts. We reload the ammo our self's and it is a very accurate and flat shooting round. It is a LA. My brother loves his and you can get it in the remington 700. I would go with the remington 700 cdl. It has the 26" barrel. My brother shoots the weatherby vanguard it only has the 24" barrel. Hope that helps you on getting your new gun.

I believe the Rem 700 SF is a short action. Remington has chambered the 257Bob in both long and short actions. The 700 Classic was a long action and the 700 mountian rifle was a short action. The 257 BOB works in both. Remington did produce some limited editions 257 bobs in stainless that were short actions. A 2.8 or 3 inch magazine box works just fine for a 257Bob.

Remington has made the 257 Roberts in both long and short actions. I have a Classic in a long action and a buddy has an ADL that is a short action. I owned a Ruger and Winchester in 257 and they were short actions. My classic loves 87 grain sierra's. I prefer the long actions over the short action guns I have owned. My classic shoot hole in hole, never could get any of the other guns to shoot like that.

I have not handled one but am pretty sure they are short action. Dont hesitate I am looking hard for last years LE in 260 and am having a heck of a time

I also have yet to own a remington that I was a better shooter than it

I have 4 rifles chambered in 257 Roberts; three are Remingtons on short actions, and a Ruger 77 long action.
I shoot 100 grain Partitions exclusively in the Ruger, and the light weight bullets in the 3 Rem's. There are SO MANY outstanding 85 to 90 grain, 25 caliber bullets, I have trouble picking just one load that shoots well. The two 87 grain Speer's, the Sierra 90 gn HPBT, and IIRC, the Sierra 85 gn HP are 3 shot, 1/2" groups loads, occasionally shooting a 3/8" group.
I'm into quarterbores as my Step Dad had a 257 built immediately after returing from WW II.

Thanks for all the great info. I am definitely going to get one. I have a 25-06 and love it but why not a 257 Roberts - right. Another question is does anyone have the 257 improved version? My original intention was to get this b/c I wanted a .257 caliber in a short action and why not try a improved chamber.

I was just able to pick up a partial box of Sierra 87gr Spitzers at a local shop, Im looking forward to giving them a shot, I have loaded the Speer 100gr HP in mine as well and got respectable groups with H414, not to hijack the thread but along the same lines I have a Ruger 77 in 250-3000 that is a blast to shoot as well, I have mainly loaded 75 grainers in it, presently my load is a 75gr V-Max with IMR-3031.

I have a 257 Roberts in an old Remington 722 which is a short action. I load 87 grain Sierras for a light bullet and a 117 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter for a deer bullet,I use IMR4350 for both. When you go to an improved cartridge you increase the capacity of the case, you also enlarge the area you must fill with powder gas to move the bullet, in most cases you won't gain a lot in my opinion, if you want more performance get a bigger cartridge is my theory.

Then 257AI is close enough to the 25-06 in velocity that it is almost a duplication. Stay with the standard 257Bob.

concur- stay the 2506 short (257) if you want to go to the trouble of a 257 AI- stay the 2506. What is a quarter inch of stroke worth? the 257 R is awesome- I recently lucked into one with a couple hundred rounds of ammo, dies, scoped in a old round top M77 for 300 bucks. I know I hope God grades on a curve for me stealing this one. HA.

Someone told me that the Bob can be in long or short action. If in short action, you cannot load the 117 grains bullet, but you can if it is in long action.

I have no personal experience with Bob in bolt gun. Mine was a Ruger No.1 and it shot almost as good as my SKS with iron sight. The problem was with the rifle, not the chambering.

My 257 is a short action, Rem 722, I load 117 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets in it with no problem. The older model 70 Winchesters were a long action because that was the only length they made.

well you already own in my opinion, the best 25 cal rifle made in the 25-06. the 25-06 is hands down my favorite. my brother owns a remington 700 bdl and a t/c encore both in 25-06 and they have proven their worth time and time again. the .257 roberts is mild compared to the -06 and weatherby magnum, but no doubt an excellent firearm. i have never heard a negative comment about a roberts. ive never been lucky enough to get my hands on one but the limited edition in wich u speak is a fine and handsome rifle! its been said many times that a weatherby mag case is almost too much for a quarter cal bullet anything less than 100 grains and is a real barrel burner! but a great deer round just the same. I have heard folks rave about the .257 roberts ackley improved, stating it as the best dual purpose round a person can get, but i have no experience with one personally. I think u will be vey happy with your desired purchase and even happier if u ream it to an ackley improved!
