257 is one bad boy and the only Weatherby I would own. Was the cal of choice when shooting big speed goats in the Red Desert. Only bad point is hard on brass and you know the cost thing. Another way to go would be a 25-06 AI
I agree & I went the 25-06AI route. I have a 26" Sendero
that A very good gunsmith rechambered for me, plus he skim
bedded the HS Pre. stock, sq. the bolt face, trued rec.,
& recrowned among other things. Now it shoots the 125gr. Wildcat at 3,250fps with groups of 1/4"-3/8"(3 shot). I will try some 100 gr. Bal. Tips this summer just to see, but I expect 3,550-3,575. 115BT will run 3,400. Basically
the 25-06AI with warm but safe reloads will run within 100fps of warm 257Wea. loads, also in a 26",to me that was acceptable, plus I got a trued-up chamber of match specs.!!!
I agree with Mike Pearson that you need in principle a 26"
tube with the 257. I suspect that DHB has a fast barrel, I
usually don't get that fortunate, but I have heard of a couple of other Vanguards that were fast, so I can't say that my view of the 26" is etched in stone, but I feel it is a safer bet. Anyway, both rounds are great.
