257bob vs 243

The exact same bullet and the exact same rifle the 257 gets maybe 100-150fps more speed and maybe 50-100ft lbs more energy. But after 400yds the 257 starts losing that speed and energy faster than the 243. Why would I buy ammo in .243 like the 100gr Nosler Partition when it is offered in a 100gr SGK which is faster and has more energy that the 257? This is exactly my point. The 257 barely beats the 243 when you limit the 243 to the standards of bullets offered for the 257. Now you load the 257 and 243 to the top of their game and the 243 is out stepping the 257 every bit of the way. And don't tell me its because of the loads for old guns because the light mag loads for the 257 cannot even keep up with the best of the 243 loads out there.

Many people would prefer the .257 with a heavy bullet like 115/120 gr for hunting larger game like Caribou or Elk and consider the .243 inadequate. Past 400 yards who cares if the .243 will catch up if you're talking hunting. At 400 yards I doubt a deer could tell the difference between the two.

Personally, I'll never ever be without a 243. I've killed more deer with a 243 than any other caliber I own. Most deer when field dressed looked like a bomb went off inside of them. JMO and I'm sticking to it.
