Yep! and be champion of the universe.

But I also agree with Jack, when starting out, it's tough to beat the old boring .308.

Bryan, i have a .260 bolt gun that i use in competition shooting and made hits out to 1350yds. The .260 is my favorite round and I have even started making them in the gas guns(AR10 type).

Good luck .

Bryan, What kind of shooting experience do you have at long range? The reason I ask is if you are still new you should look into the .308 as was mentioned earlier. Ammo is plentiful and barrel life is long.

If you go with a Savage in .308 you can always rebarrel it to a .260 when you choose to (this is what I am doing with my Savage after the first of the yr.).

I don't know what you are planing to use yours for but mine will be mostly for plinking and the occasional hunt. I am going with a 26" varmint barrel with a 1x8 twist. The 26" barrel will give good velocity and the 1x8 twist will shoot up to the heaviest bullets for the .260.

As far as glass the best bang for your buck is going to be the classified section. There are always good deals to be found there.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input!

I shoot out to about 300 yards with my Ar pretty regularly, it not that far but its still some distance. And ive poked out to around 500yards with my .22-250 if i remeber correctly (day of messing around woodchuck huntin).

Im pretty sure ill pick up fast on 500+

If i get a gun now I want it to suit me for good and not have to mess with different cals. If i have to buy a new barrel in a year or two then so be it.

Im going to be working off of a savage action. I called around and all the gun stores have no Savage short actions/ savage short actions rifles but I found a 7mm-08 Stevens 200 at gander for $350. So im figuring that ill get that strip the gun sell the stock, barrel, and possibly trigger. Then ill get a 24" 1:8 twist and ill pick up a stock! Then i just need a glass.

how dose this sound?

~Bryan

Im not sure

What dose #5 or #6 mean?

If you go on midway there a ton of savage models for barrels.

What model would I need to get for it to fit the stevens?

~Bryan

Bryan, Check with Jim Briggs at Northland Shooter Supply over on the Savage Shooters forum. Jim can sell you an action w/trigger, a Shilen, a Criterion (Kreiger Barrels buttoned rifle offerings) or a McGowen in your choice of twist and length! No need in parting out a rifle. Just start with the pieces that you want and build yourself a rifle to suit your needs. I have done this same thing more than a few times and it has always yielded great shooters tailored to my needs and costs less than parting out a brand new rifle.
Jim Briggs is one of the finest gentleman that you will ever encounter and he does know what he is doing too! He does love to talk so be prepared to be on the telephone for a little while if you call him though

Best of luck with your project!

Bryan8,
If you want a 260 then get one. Why be average joe.

Do lots of research and choose wisely. No reason to be unhappy when it's said and done.

Jim is great to deal with bought stuff from him several times.

He also has savage target actions as another option. I was going to post up what he has for you but the site is acting up, mabey later.

I have been using Joel Russo Riflestocks lately for my rifle builds. I have a new stock that he made for me from a blank that I laminated from my own exotic woods. It is a clone of the Manners T-2 stock, one of my favorite stocks.
It is made of Bubinga and figured Anigre (the lighter colored wood). Here are a few photos of the stock.
It will have a Savage Target Action with 28" SS Shilen varmint contour barrel. I won't have it finished until February/March most likely as I am trying to finish up a new reloading room that I am building.

Joel's stock's are not cheap, but the inletting is impeccable and they are ready to finish when you get them. Joel installed the Alex Sitman adjustable cheek piece hardware for me on this stock too. Can't wait for my next stock from him which is be built now, a thumb hole tactical style stock for prone shooting. I should have that one about the time I finish the new build with this stock pictured here.

What finish will go on it ?

It will get oiled and then a satin clear lacquer, hand sanded between coats. I don't want a high gloss finish, as it takes away from the beauty of the wood.
The Bubinga I used was quartersawn. It has a nice ribbon like effect to it once it is finished.

Here is the info. the Criterion barrels Jim is selling.

Quote:Northland Shooters Supply is officially announcing the launch of their sales with Criterion Barrels. Criterion Barrels, the button rifling division of Krieger Barrels, has assigned NSS as their retail outlet for the purchase of the Criterion Button Rifled Barrels.
