.260 As an LR round

Having old Curly on ignore has proven to be one of life's simple pleasures, so far. The only "information" you miss is misinformation, and you save the aggravation. I'd pay money for it........

The Bubinga has a definite red cast to it, but once it is oiled, it will tone down a bit. Joel's website is Russo Rifle Stocks Here are a couple of photos of one of Joel's stocks in a A-5L McMillan style made from flatsawn Bubunga with figured grain:

This is great! He's talking right now, and I can't here it. You gotta try it.....

If he ever says anything that makes even an inkling of sense, contact me, and I'll check it out, for it will truly be a momentous occasion. Otherwise, I'm truly reaping the rewards simultaneously.....

For a barrel you could also look at Benchmark, I have one and it shoots bugholes. There number is hard to find since they don't advertise but it is 360-652-2594. Oh and they make Savage Pre-fits.

PS.

Curly I like your Signature!

I also have a Benchmark cut rifle barrel in 6BR on one of my Savages. Absolutely no complaints at all. I also have a Brux in 6.5-284 that is really a great shooter too. Many really good barrel makers these days.

Bryan8, how did you come to decide on the 260 as a candidate for a LR rig? I dont have any experiance with LR shooting but would like to build a gun next year to learn. i was just wondering what abou the 260 caught your eye?

thanks

Very high BC, great SD. Its accurate and doesn't kick that hard. Its flat shooting and hard hitting. Its not a wildcat and factory ammo is available.

I might scrap the stevens idea because Jim and I came up with this.

Criterion 26" - Stainless Match - Small Shank - Varmint - 260 Rem. - 1:8 Twist - $250.00

Savage Model 12 Varmit Action - $400 or Stevens model - $235

Then Im still dicideing on a stock. I want a detachable box mag. And Jim said he a Savage Varmint low profile with detachable box mag. - $275

Right now im at $650 with the Model 12 action, or $485 with the stevens, but it doesn't have the accutrgger. Thats not includeing stock, I still want to look around but it would be $925 with the model 12 action or $760 with the stevens action

How do these parts/prices sound?

~Bryan

If I were putting the setup you are looking for together and it was my wallet I would pull the trigger and get the complete setup stock and all. I had a vlp in 22-250 that I really liked and it would be exact except the factory vlp has a fluted barrel.

I'm pretty sure the only difference in a Stevens action and a Savage action are the triggers. So for me I'd go with the Stevens and get a Rifle Basix trigger.

Spend the extra.
I thought the basic actions were pretty much identical?

The Stevens and the Savage actions are identical except the accu-trigger. Put a Sharpshooters Supply Competition trigger on it and you are better than good to go. The only reason that I would buy the Savage action is if you want a SS action, otherwise save the money.

Bryan,

The prices are more than fair and Jim is a great resource to utilize too. You are basically assembling a great rifle that will in all likelihood, will be a great shooter.
The RB trigger SAV=2 is a great trigger, but the Sharp Shooters Supply Competition trigger is at least as good and about $50.00 less. Fred Moreno, owner of Sharp Shooter's Supply, is the best Savage gunsmith IMO and has more knowledge about Savage rifles than anyone that I that I am aware of, though he is too damned busy most times and lead times can be frustrating as well as contacting them.
As far as the stock, you have a world of options, but the VLP works well. I have a VLP in 223 that I really enjoy shooting. If it fits you, its all good. Let us know how it works out for you. Pictures, pictures!
