264 LBC or 6.5 grendel

Not in down range performance but I prefer the LBC because of to me the increased cartidge support and too my mind stronger bolts. And yes I have both.

All I have used are the 6.5 Grendel SAAMI chamber and .136 bolt face 6.5 Grendel bolt. The Les Baer 264 LBC get good reviews but he states not to use suppressors. My Son in Law has a Lothar Walther 6.5 CSS and it is accurate 22” 1:9 twist SS.

It seems most manufacturers have started chambering barrels to use the .136 bolt. Last I checked Columbia River Arms/Black Hole Weaponry were still using 7.62x39 bolts with .125 bolt face depth.

Get a quality barrel and you should be gtg just be aware that the .125 and .136 bolts are not interchangeable. You have to use the bolt for which the barrel was chambered.

There are a lot of barrel options today that shoot 6.5 Grendel ammunition. JP Inc, Wilson Combat, Noveseke, Lilja, AA, LaRue Tactical, Les Baer, Precision Firearms, Criterion, Shilen, Ballistic Advantage, Core, Double Star/J&T Distributing, Odin, Faxon and recently PSA to name a few.

I haven't seen where Baer talks about the no suppressor deal. I see he doesn't offer threaded tubes. I can't imagine why he would take that position since they are suppressing Grendels all over the place. The cartridge itself is identical while the chamber is different in throat and neck size.

to get past the bolt problem can a 7.63 bolt be used with a 6.5 grendel case or do you have to get barrel cut for 264 LBC?

I read on another forum where someone was using a suppresor and broke a couple of bolts. The person contacted LB in regards to getting an adjustable gas block. LB CS stated they didn’t sell adjustable gas blocks and didn’t warranty their AR-15’s for use with suppressors. I’ve looked on LB website and can’t find where they offer adjustable gas blocks.

Like everything you read on the internet you have to take with a grain of salt and if I planned on using a suppressor I’d contact LB. I don’t even remember if the LB AR-15 was a 243 LBC, 264 LBC or which chambering. I read this at least one year ago. As common as suppressors have become is the only reason I mentioned it. You’d think as expensive as LB AR-15’s are a suppressor would not be an issue.

A barrel is chambered for either 7.63x39 bolt with .125 bolt face depth or 6.5 Grendel bolt with .136 bolt face depth to better deal with the thicker 6.5 Grendel rim and give more room for a beefier extractor. Prior to Colt releasing their 7.62x39 AR-15 Colt adopted the .136 bolt face depth to deal with the thicker rim of the 7.62x39 case. The 5.56/223 bolt uses a .125 bolt face depth. During testing AA decided to used the .136 bolt face to improve the durability of the extractor with 6.5 Grendel.

Les Baer to my knowledge always chambered his barrels to use 6.5 Grendel .136 bolts.

Black Hole Weaponry first sold barrel chambered to use 7.62x39 .125 bolts then later chambered some barrels to use 6.5 Grendel .136 bolts with 264 LBC chambered barrels.

BHW coined the term Type 1 to signify a 264 LBC barrel used .125 bolt. BHW used Type II to indicate the barrel was chambered to use .136 6.5 Grendel bolts.

The bolts are not interchangeable and are to be used only in barrels for which they were originally chambered.

Th LB guns are all 264 LBC. They have NEVER done a 243 LBC. The first commercial one on the market with anything like that derivation was done by BHW and the cartridge for them was designed by Ritch.
